No links, just a quick report. (News are EVERYWHERE, here in China at least.)

Yao Scored 21 points in a 83-74 win against Angola, on 8-10 shooting and 5-7 FTs, with 2 fouls and a normal amount of TOs (that's like, 5.) I watched the whole game, and though he has not really regained his shooting touch, he seemed very excited to play substantial time in such a fierce game, (29 minutes), and didn't look bothered by his foot. He was agile, especially in sprints across the court, but got burned in the first quartered defensively (this Angolian center Gomes scored like 10+ points in five minutes on Yao.) But everything's definitely improving for him.

In the meantime, Luis Scola was the main reason Argentina managed to beat Iran today, the latter of which surprised many people with a spectacular performance in the Diamond Cup opener. Scola scored 23 points, while Manu Ginobili got 15.

The Diamond Cup is supposed to be the last chance to warm up for the Olympics, therefore almost all the teams attended have brought out their best rosters and are competing very hard to gain the psychological upper hand on their opponents in August.

Just typed all this really fast, so I haven't box scores yet. Don't know if ESPN reports this stuff.

Dammit, just noticed I misspelled "Scola" in the title. Mods, please fix it. Thanks.

So Ginobli is playing in the Olympics? The last I heard the Spurs didn't want him to play, if so that's great!

Yao Ming plays 28 minutes in China's 83-74 win over Angola in Olympic warmup

NANJING, China (AP) -Yao Ming scored 21 points in 28 minutes Tuesday to lead China to an 83-74 win over Angola, continuing his successful return from injury with less then two weeks to go until the Beijing Olympics.

The Houston Rockets center marked his full reintegration into a China team that had just weeks ago faced the prospect of heading to the games without their star player.

"Yao lets us really put the pressure on the opposition,'' China guard Liu Wei said after the opening day of the FIBA Diamond Ball tournament.

Facing a speedy and determined Angola, the 2.26-meter (7-foot-6) Yao didn't score until nearly halfway through the second quarter, but he then repeatedly combined with former Shanghai Sharks teammate Liu to put China ahead 40-37 at the break.

The two continued their fruitful partnership in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 11 points before Angola came back in the final period. The African champions closed to within three points, but were let down by poor shooting, going just 48 percent from the field and making only 56 percent of their free throws.

"We shot really badly and gave up some really easy offensive opportunities,'' Angola coach Alberto Carvalho said.

The win avenges a 72-71 loss to Angola in an Olympic warm-up tournament earlier this month. The teams again face each other Group B at the Olympics along with Germany, Greece, Spain and the United States.

Yao scored eight of his 10 field goals and was 71 percent from the free throw line. He also had five rebounds and was impressive running down the court, showing no sign of discomfort from the stress fracture in his left foot that ended his NBA season in February and threatened his Olympic participation.

Yao returned to light training late last month after X-rays and an MRI scan taken in Houston showed his recovery was on schedule, at about 80 percent healed. Such injuries usually take a year to fully heal.

China coach Jonas Kazlauskas said he would continue to play Yao for 25-30 minutes per game, but would also rely on former Dallas Mavericks center Wang Zhizhi to fill gaps. Wang shot 40 percent from the field for just five points in about 22 minutes, while power forward Yi Jianlian, recently acquired by the New Jersey Nets, had 11 points.

"Of course we always expect more from our big men,'' the Lithuanian coach said.

Angola forward Joaquim Gomes said a strong showing by the entire Chinese team - four players finished in double digits - had been decisive.

"Yao Ming can score 20, 30 points, but the rest of the players can't hurt us,'' Gomes said. "But this time China played really well as a team.''

In another game, defending Olympic champion Argentina earned an 81-71 win over Iran, which is making its first Olympic basketball appearance since 1948.

Rockets forward Luis Scola scored a game-high 23 points for Argentina, while San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili added another 15.

"I'm feeling good. I just want to feel even better and play more,'' Ginobili said.

Didn't the jazz summer league team destroy Iran by over 30 points? If it was the same iran team that only lost by 10 to Argentina then I think that eases my mind that team usa is going to win the gold.

I was just thinking the same thing.

Look at those arms...when he first came into the league, they were like 1" electrical conduit....now they haven't fully developed into the boiler pipes that I hope to see some day, but he's got some garden pvc workin there.

I hope this means that he will start utilizing his muscle more now...ie...not getting the ball stripped...maybe put an elbow just below someones eye socket...Deke would love to teach him!!

Like he said earlier, the team that played the Jazz was probably the scrub squad, the equivalent to our "Select Team". As this was the last game before the Olympics they probably brought out their starters. One thing I'm scared to death of...If Dwight Howard goes down, Lebron James is gonna have to Hold Yao. He's the next biggest body since chandler may be out.
