Gortat can be an average starting center in the league if he gets the chance. Average starting center in the league makes more than MLE money. Centers are expensive. Check out the contracts of the likes of Dampier, Dalembert, Chandler, etc.
We WEREN'T GETTING GORTAT anyway. There's no way we could get him, according to NBA rules the most we can offer him is the MLE, and the Magic matched that. In short there's no way we can get Gortat in the first place, even if DM had "over offered" him in the first place.
Moot point anyway, like people mentioned. Orlando ended up matching so really no team would have gotten him. A 5% chance he would have ended up somewhere else.
Exactly, and it wouldn't have mattered if we had signed him to an offer sheet, since the Magic matched it anyway.
My understanding is that the Rockets could not have offered him more than the MLE even if they wanted to. And, the Magic were going to match any MLE offer. So, actually, it was smart not to offer him more money.
I never followed him or anything, but the very (very) few games I saw him in.. he seemed really average to me. Maybe that's why I didn't get the hype, but I guess an average, consistent Center is what this team needs. Especially as a back up next season. I wish big men were more abundant. I really don't like the midget rule Sperm has put in place.
Agreed. I just think it's a good bet that if they find this 20+ minute rotation guy he'll be shooter/perimeter-oriented player. Basically, a version of what they already have in Shard, Ryan Anderson and all those other guys playing out of position yet getting minutes at the four. SVG seems too set in his ways to think otherwise. As for Gortat right now: I'm still very much interested if Orlando is indeed looking to move him. For me, the boundary line between $3-5M per year (what we were supposedly ready to offer) versus $5-7M (what he actually got) isn't all that significant. Why? Because I feel he's a starter in this league and $5-7M per year for a starting center is actually a bargain if you look around the league. Center is easily the position teams are most prone to overpaying for. Leebigez and I share the same opinion that if we had him right now we would be MUCH better on both ends around the basket. The guy can flat-out produce when he's given minutes -- he could start this year, help us bring back Yao gradually next year, back up Yao (Yao, even at his best, was only a 32 MPG type of player) and lastly he can play minutes at the four. He's also mobile enough to the point where we wouldn't be leaving ourselves vulnerable by throwing he and Yao out there at the same time. That said, Battier-for-Gortat/Redick
Yes, I'm glad we're not paying Gortat 5 years/$35 million. Would I have liked to get him at whatever Morey offered? Sure. I'm not going to dwell on it, though.
Don't you get half the players salary on a injury exception? I'll go look at coon's fact and come back.
Huh? We couldnt get Gortat for the simple reason the Magic matched the full Mid-level exception offer, which under the CBA is the highest anyone can offer him. Dallas pulled the gun on Gortat and the Magic matched him. If DM had offered him the max Mid-level, the result would have been the same, Magic would have matched and we would be left Gortat-less anyway. How hard is that to understand
I always wondered what was Morey's motivation in trying to convince Gortat to sign for less than the MLE. He must have known that Orlando would definitely match such an offer. So then was his plan to try to pry Gortat from Orlando later through trade? I guess I'll never know.
I think you're overthinking it. DM probably valued Gortat at less than the mid-level, which is why he only offered that much. If he knew Orlando would match the offer then why bother offering at all? If his plan was to try and pry him away through trade then he would have just approached the magic for a sign and trade instead of contacting Gortat himself.
it wouldnt matter because orlando would've exercised their option to match our offer just like they did to Dallas. Now hes overpaid and is considered useless by some
stats dont show everything he is a great backup to dwight, and he is a pretty good defensive center off the bench actually.
This. Besides, 4 rpg and 1 bpg in 13 mpg isn't half damn bad. I don't know if he was worth more than what Morey was offering, but I disagree if you're trying to imply that he's scrubbing it up for Orlando.
Anytime you have a chance to aquire a legit center, you should go for it. Considering that Gortat is an excellent big man I would love to have him right now.
Yeah you're probably right. I guess I can't figure out why Morey would make an offer that he pretty much knows will either be rejected by Gortat or matched by Orlando. It seemed obvious to even a casual fan like me. Then again, this is the same guy who, in one of his first moves after becoming GM, showed up at Rashard Lewis's door with the enticing offer of...an MLE contract. *scratches head*
Gortat could have been a legit starting in this league. Great on defence and blocks shots even in limited minutes.
