    Like it or not, Elizabeth Smart represents the American ideal. That's why it's a story that sticks. More of America is unnerved by her abduction than they are of the abductions of minority children.

    To top it off, she was stolen from the sanctitiy of her own bed in her own home in an affluent community in the middle of the night. What could be more chilling to every one tucking their children into bed at night.

    I know; I've got 3 daughters.
