I'd also like to point out that AT&T offers postpaid service without a contract. Just bring your own device. Are there any savings? No. Unless you have an employer discount But to some people who prefer to have their own phone, roaming, more widespread HSPA+coverage, and international coverage , it is also an option if you don't want to be stuck in a 2 year agreement.
for the other folks who stay in galveston, at&t finally turned on lte this weekend. more reason for folks here to give gophone or aio a shot.
if you're on straight talk I just got refilled from this auction on ebay $200 for 6 months http://www.ebay.com/itm/Straight-Ta...925?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f26da5e9d
I pretty much only text, so I switched over to the unlimited text and data plan/100 mins talk from TMobile. It's $30 a month prepaid service.
I regrett getting a contract last december My phone can convert to prepaid gophone plan. But id still have to pay early termination fees. Postpaid, if you miss a payment can still keep on service a little longer. Prepaid gotta stay ahead. But less likely to behind if bill is 40% cheaper
nice. I am assuming internet as well? I am paying double that at Sprint for same thing. damn. Time to take a look. Good thread OP.
When does nexus 5 come out? I have a friend that broke her phone and I wanted to sell my nexus 4 to her and temporarily use a dumb until it comes out. P.S. still loving the $30 T-Mobile plan. Verrrry reasonable
I've been on Virgin Mobile for about 2 years now. The phones are pricey though. I bought the iPhone 4S 16GB last year for $400 but I only pay $30 per month for 300 minutes and unlimited data. They have a decent selection of phones too not just iPhones. Even paying for the full price of the phone Im saving about $500 compared to AT&T or Verizon. Just letting you guys know.
updating from my post from the first back back in Feb. I did use TMobile's $30/5G data with 100 mins/unlimited text, but I underestimated my voice usage, 100 mins wasn't enough, and this was when I was unemployed and barely used the phone, so I looked at the other options out there with unlimited mins. Been using Net10 prepaid (Tracfone subsidiary, same people that run Straight Talk). since March on Nexus 4, plus have my parents on iPhone 4, and I pay $125 total for all 3 lines for unlimited mins/text/data. Have had some setbacks with setting up the phones at first, but have been working fine since. Now it does come with a price. They do use ATT/TMobile SIM cards, I prefer ATT SIM because I can use call fowarding and use Google Voice for my voicemail. TMobile doesn't allow call forwarding on prepaid plans, even if you use them directly. With iPhones, you can get the data to work when using their APN settings, but MMS won't work unless you have it jailbroken and manually input the MMS settings. My parents don't MMS at all and use email to share pics from their iPhones so its no big deal for them. Plus they don't support the iPhone Voicemail feature, you would have to check old school style by dialing in, entering password, then go from there. As far as data, I'm getting HSPA+ on all 3 lines. Its no LTE, but I have no complaints after using Verizon's 4G LTE for almost 2 years. Overall, I'm happy with my experience, don't see a reason why I'd go back to the big 4 networks, I'm pretty much dedicated to unlocked Nexus devices, and pretty sure I can make those iPhones last a good while for my parents.
I just made the switch two weeks ago. I had a $40 plan with corp discount from AT&T, but pay per use data and text. I bought a Nexus 4 for $250 when they went on sale and am now on a $40 plan with unlimited text and 200 MB data. I almost never use mobile data, so it should be fine, I've used 20 MBs so far. I did set hard limits on my phone so I won't go over on the data though. If you want to use more data, T-Mobile's plan is probably better...$50 and they throttle your data if you use too much instead of charging you.
Why people continue to pay $100/mo for major carriers is beyond me. I've been using Simple Mobile (t-mobile network) for a few years at $44/month (incl tax us to be $40 incl tax). Unlimited talk text and web, which I use an iphone 4s. Just bring your phone and buy a sim card and you're golden...
Hmm... I think the site says you only get 2.5GB of 4G data before being throttled to 2G. Does that sound about right? I was using T-Mobile prepaid ($30 plan), but sort of talked myself into trying out their post-paid family plan. Most of my family couldn't care less about data usage (my mom doesn't even have 4G available in her area), so I can sort of subsidize my unlimited everything plan (including unlimited 4G...I think it is unlimited anyway) with their unlimited everything (but only 500MB of 4G) plans. Think we have it at $110/month for 3 of us right now, but might get it up to $130/month for 5 of us. There are some additional taxes/fees though (don't think I got those with prepaid), and if my family ever decides it wants more than 500MB of 4G, I might need to switch to something else. Net10 might be better in that case (I can probably live with 2.5GB of 4G).
I had a brain fart earlier and didn't post this for some reason: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...with-200-minutes-500-texts-and-500mb-of-data/ PR and more at the link. I don't have any interest in trying this out for a variety of reasons, but it does seem very interesting. For some family members (who are around Wifi the majority of the time...and maybe use IM/email instead of text messages), this could maybe work out really well (especially if you throw in Skype/VoiP services).
pgabriel, thanks for starting this thread! I'm now seriously thinking about switching from Verizon to Ting. Question for anyone: I've never had a phone with a data plan before (I've always used voice only, not even really a text guy). If I just want to be able to browse the web for google maps and gmail on the weekends when I'm out, how much data do I really need? Would a 100MB/month plan be sufficient?
I would recommend more than 100mb. I am not on mine much and I use up a bit. It all starts adding up and all it takes is a couple app updates to take a chunk out of your bucket. When I had 100mb and I ran out, my phones battery life would drop quickly and get all quirky since I couldn't get data anymore. Unless you truly use very few minutes, Ting is not a fantastic deal. I use Page Plus Cellular. i have the 1200m/3000t/500M for 29.99 and get an addition 5% discount if I order prepaid cards. They have a 250m/250t/50M plan for 12.00. Ting has the 100m/100t/100m plan for $15 + surcharges.
