Awesome mrpaige. I'm envious. Hopefully knowing this will make me get off my duff to work on a few outstanding things this week.

    Pimp,

I work more in the QA side than in the programming side. Most of my programming comes with automated testing using WinRunner. I've loved to program since I was a kid. I started programming when I was about 14 years old on an old Apple computer. I used to program in BASIC and machine language back then. As I jumped into the "work force" in my 20's I quickly found out I'd never want to create software for a company. Programmers can be some of the most abused humans on the planet. Project timelines getting crunched, scope creep, complete reversals on decisions made just a week earlier, etc. I program for fun and I think I'll keep it that way. WinRunner gives me just enough of that "fun" element without having to worry about creating programs for companies and having them ruin what I consider fun.

If you're getting into programming, get a book on Java or Visual Basic, then get either a free Java compiler/IDE or get the Learning Edition of Visual Basic (which you can get free on a CD in one of those Visual Basic books) and start playing around with it. See if you like doing it. A lot of people are enamored with programming as a quick way to make money, but have no idea how mentally taxing it can be especially with management cracking the whip over you to "hurry up and finish!".

Paige, that wasn't half bad. [IMG]

Very brave of you to post it for all to see.

If I may say a few things:

I got an early Kevin Smith vibe - a kid of Clerks feel...I think for two reasons -- A. Patrick reminded me of Smith's Randall, and two [IMG] the dialog -- intelligent discussions of stupid things, movie trivia...

Not to say it was completely derivative..just a feeling.

Obviously more needs to be hammered out -- a little more development of characters and story.

I did not like the early father lines -- too cliche old man kinda stuff. That kind of "In my day" thing has been played to death.

There were some clever parts and I did laugh.

Oh, one thing that bothered me..hw old are these people? Why are tey all "girls" and not women. That seemed a little insulting. I do not think that two women would be talking about a husband seeing another "girl." Sorry.

Anyway, what do I know about this, right? There is definitely some good in there. My wife knows ore about these things than I (it was one of her majors way back when). Anyway, just my humble opinion.

    Congrats.

Oh, how long did it take for you to put this together?

Right now I am on an internship at Intel while working toward a degree in computer engineering. What I would like to do is own my own software company, like DaDakota used to before he sold out. [IMG]

Man, it's been a long time since I have been able to post here!

    mc mark,

You're not the only one here who's in the most difficult of all games. I'm trying to make it out there as well. In fact, I'll be joining you in NY before the year is up. Know anyone who's looking for a roommate? [IMG]

I just got my first agent a few weeks ago...I've had a few auditions but nothing has come of them yet. I'm still plugging away, though. [IMG]

I'm doing a lot of theatre which, to tell you the truth, is my foremost love. Film does pay the bills, though. Can't wait to land my first SAG job. [IMG] I'm about to start my second summer at American Players Theatre in Spring Green Wisconsin. Heard of it? They do really good work and are careful to hire really cool people. I highly recommend, if you're into classical theatre and can stand five to six months out in the middle of nowhere, auditioning if you get the chance.

Anyway, probably rambled on too long.

Good luck out there. See ya in the game.

    Gascon

    Changes careers 5 times??

Damn! And I thought that I wqas on my final one!! (my third)

I started out getting a A.A.S. in Auto Technology [IMG]

Worked as a mechanic for 3 years until I finally figured out that I hated it!

Then I took my part-time gig as a local band sound engineer and stage tech and decided to start going to school for Audio Engineering and almost finished it before a family emergency required that I quit school.
Besides, the local studios wanted me to work as an intern for no pay and I couldn't afford to do that with my family responsiblities.

6 years ago I discovered computers and found out that I have a knack for diagnosing and fixing tham. So now I am a CIS major (Computer Information Systems for those that are acronymly-impaired) [IMG]
with a specialization towards being a Network Admin or maybe if I am as good as I think I will end up as a Cisco tech.

    Ribaud:

The Kevin Smith vibe is a valid point. I probably shouldn't have watched both Clerks and Mallrats last weekend. There were times when I was reading it after writing it that I saw the Randall/Brodie stuff in Patrick. Of course, if one is going to rip off someone, might as well rip off someone good. [IMG]

I think you're right about the father scenes, too. I wanted to have a scene where they meet the parents and the parents are totally insane, but when I was trying to write it, I couldn't think of anything for them to say. That's probably my least favorite part. I may eventually take the meeting the parents scene out completely. It's not really necessary (even the bit with the mother at the end is essentially a rehash of what Patrick said in the scene before).

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I think you make good points. That's the beauty of the first draft, things can be changed for the second draft. [IMG] Oh, and thanks for taking the time to read it.

At any rate, I started writing on February 5th (last Monday) and finished on February 10th (Saturday). I would've finished sooner, but there was good TV on Wednesday that distracted me, and I went to the movies on Friday night and got almost nothing done then (I ended up writing 2 pages that night). It was easy to write, though, because I had the general idea for this story about four years ago, and I've taken notes when I had an idea from time to time.

    mrpaige,

If you get your screenplay bought and made into a big Hollywood movie, I think I'm entitled to some sort of compensation. Being that it was my thread that got you to finish it! [IMG]

Of course. I think that's standard in the industry these days. As a matter of fact, I think there is a union called The Inspirational Thread Starters Guild that looks out for the interests of people just like you. [IMG]

I'll keep my eyes and ears peeled.

Let me know when you're in NYC and we'll get together and have a beer. We need more Rocket fans in New York.
