mc... did you go to film school? If so, where at? For awhile I've been planning to go to Missouri for journalism, but I've been thinking lately it'd be really cool to, I dunno, do some acting, even if the first while is rough. It appeals strongly =) what's it like, man? Share your experience... that is, if you want to, of course. ------------------ "I don't want to join a club that accepts people like me as members."
I'd like to rule the world and put you all to work in my underground sugar mines. So the answer is no. ------------------ The Rockets will be the NBA champions. Believe.
I majored in it at UH and actually worked at a couple of local newspapers for a few years as both a reporter and editor. My advice: start drinking now. That way you'll get a head start on the alcoholism that seems to fuel the entire profession. Otherwise, it's a pretty neat gig. ------------------

I want to be cattle drover but since there's no longer a need for that line of work atleast not here in the states the answer is no.Another thing that interests me is offshore fishing or crabbing in Alaska. ------------------ I don't cry when my dog runs away I don't get angry at the bills I have to pay I don't get angry when my mom smokes pot hits the bottle and goes back to the rock f%ck&n fightin it's all the same live with louie dog's the only way to stay sane let the lovin' let the lovin' come back to me
Actually, I have written two short stories, the first of which I can't stand to look at anymore, and the second of which I still think isn't that good, and reads kind of cumbersome, but that is better. ------------------ "Of course, everything looks bad if you remember it!" Homer Simpson
I was in journalism for a brief time myself, then I drifted to PR (my favorite job. Kinda wish I didn't get fired from that one) and then into some graphic design (mostly ad design for newspapers). I've fallen into some other stuff since then, though, and have recently returned to college to get my MBA. (After my cousin got hired at the New York Times, I figured that he was the journalist in the family and that I should give it up). Considering that I majored in Accouting (I did take journalism classes in college, though), I figured I ended up with a pretty odd career path. I've never worked as an accountant at all. But what I really want to do is direct. (Actually, I really do, though I don't have any illusions of making a living at it. I hope to do some short films and maybe a feature for fun at some point soon. If it turns into something, great. If it doesn't, at least I can say that I did it.) ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page [This message has been edited by mrpaige (edited January 26, 2001).]
I love my job!! Not because it is rewarding (because it isn't), not because I make a ton of money (which I do), not because I get to sit around for twelve hours a shift doing nothing but watching TV, reading books, or posting on CC.Net (ok, so I do work a little).... It's because I work shift work, which gives me lots of free time to spend with my family. I have three kids, and being involved with their lives is soooo rewarding. So when the boredom and tedium of 12 hours overnight set in, I just think about my next long change (7 days off in a row every month) and everything I can do for those 7 days. ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS Asking the question: What is more dangerous, an AK-47 or a scooter?

Congratulations HP!!! It's about time! And if you're serious, then yeah, I'd love to cook up some briskets for you. Give me some details. ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS Asking the question: What is more dangerous, an AK-47 or a scooter?
Jeff I'd read a stat like that...I am 30 now, and I am already up to about three I think 'careers' don't really exist much anymore for most people. My wife is in the medical field, and people in those fields tend to be 'lifers'...but not many aother area's. Even school teachers seem to do it just for a few years now. I think it's a good thing...people should chop and change if they can. Life is all about experiencing as much as you can. Mind you...I spoke to a woman at my work yesterday and she asked me how long I'd been where I am. I replied "going on two years..." and asked her how long she'd been here. She replied "almost ten...your stuck here...this place sucks you in and you'll never get out!" Ii considered drafting my resignation immediately ------------------
Zac, No I didn't go to film school. I went to Sam Houston State University for their theater program. "Why?" you may ask. I paid for school myself and it was all I could afford. But I have to say, for a small school in the middle of no-where, Sam has a great theater program. From what I hear, they have a great journalism program too. Anyway, this is going to sound a little harsh, but unless you are fully committed to a career in acting, and I mean FULLY committed, I would think of something else to do. Its a very hard field, the rejection on a daily basis is brutal. You've got to have a pretty thick skin. The always looking for the next job, the constant calling and mailing of head shots to agents and directors that don't even look at them, the cut throat attitude of other actors, its a madhouse. Now, if you feel like you can deal with a life of constant fluctuation and never having any money, then it's the most wonderful life in the world! I love it and could never see myself doing anything else. Oh sure, I've had many other jobs. But they were always a means to an end. And unless you have the most understanding and supportive parents in the world, expect a lot of resistance from them. Well, have I painted a grim enough picture for you? If not, welcome to the beauty, splendor and agony of acting! ------------------ 'Deeds, not words, shall speak me.' [This message has been edited by mc mark (edited January 26, 2001).]
Even that is not necessarily true anymore. The guy who painted my Dad's house used to be a nurse, and I know another former nurse who simply got tired of being a nurse, so she went back to school and became a reporter. Come to think of it, there were several former nurses in the accounting program when I was in college (and that was a time when nurses were in really short supply and could write their own ticket financially. My mother-in-law, a nurse, worked three days per week and made almost $60,000 per year during that period of time.) Personally, I blame Seasame Street for all this willy-nilly career changes. It seems like we get bored with one thing if we have to do it for too long, so we go and find something else. There's really nothing wrong with it. But, I think one could find a correlation between the rise of the short attention span in Americans and a rise in changing careers among Americans. That's my theory anyway. ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
Not yet, but I will certainly let you know when I am. ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
Screaming: I'm on my 5th. My mother, a retired high school guidance counselor, is thrilled. mrpaige: That is a very interesting theory about the short attention spans correlating to changes in careers. I think it also has a lot to do with the changing concept of work in America. We have more jobs today that didn't exist 20 years ago than we had jobs to fill 20 years ago. In addition, people are getting tired of working in the corporate world (if they weren't Dilbert wouldn't be funny and movies like Office Space would never get made). In fact, the fastest growing segment of the business world is the small business and the fastest growing segment of the small business world is the home based business. Can anyone tell that I spoke at a career day for middle schooler's recently? ------------------ Me fail English? That's unpossible.
Definitely sounds rough, but... I'll do some thinking. Thanks for the input. One thing I do have going for me is that my parents will no doubt support anything I want to do, with the possible exception of going into the p*rn industry. They're cool that way. =) ------------------ "I don't want to join a club that accepts people like me as members."
What could be more enjoying than being a pimp? OK, seriously, I'm recruiting for an electronic manufacturing company. Is it what I want to do? No. What do I want to do? I guess thats the million dollar question. I think I want to be a p*rn star or a personal trainer. DoD, I'm curious, how did you get started in software programming? Do you enjoy it? What is the best part of your job...other than money? ------------------ "Hockey is a sport for white men. Basketball is a sport for black men. You know, after responding to this thread and thinking about my dreams and what-have-you, I decided to actually do something that was sort-of related to what I wanted to do. So, I am just putting the finishing touches on my first screenplay. It may suck, but at least I've now written a screenplay, and I will now be telling everybody who asks what I do for a living that I am a screenwriter. And maybe tonight I am one step closer to actually directing a movie. I've got a script to work from, and that's a start. ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
