if you're telling me now you can look at someone and tell me if they're a good father by their jawline, i'm telling you that you're full of it. directly linking behavior to physical appearance...that seems wrong to me.

He would see faces in movies, on T.V., in magazines, and in books....
He thought that some of these faces might be right for him....And
through the years, by keeing an ideal facial structure fixed in his
mind....Or somewhere in the back of his mind....That he might, by
force of will, cause his face to approach those of his ideal....The
change would be very subtle....It might take ten years or so....
Gradually his face would change its' shape....A more hooked nose...
Wider, thinner lips....Beady eyes....A larger forehead.
He imagined that this was an ability he shared with most other
people....They had also molded their faced according to some
ideal....Maybe they imagined that their new face would better
suit their personality....Or maybe they imagined that their
personality would be forced to change to fit the new appear-
ance....This is why first impressions are often correct...
Although some people might have made mistakes....They may have
arrived at an appearance that bears no relationship to them....
They may have picked an ideal appearance based on some childish
whim, or momentary impulse....Some may have gotten half-way
there, and then changed their minds.
He wonders if he too might have made a similar mistake.

We make subconscious decisions all the time, it doesn't mean they are correct. We are physically drawn to healthy looking people. For millions of years a good father meant a strong, healthy father. The king of the pack gets the babes. Survival of the fittest still applies to humans. We can not escape our biology and evolutionary traits. That's why we are not attracted to really old people and find them sexually repugnant etc. It's in our genes.

i'm not doubting the sub-concious decision.

i'm doubting the ability to predict the behavior of a person based on how they look.

Then why would women subconsciously discriminate based upon physical attributes at all? I think were are more innately in-tuned with others much more than we realize. Women being able to subconsciously determine if a man likes children seems very realistic to me. It has probably have been going on for millions of years.

EDIT: Not to stir the pot, but... out of all the "rolleyes" pictures of pops we've posted, only 1 is white and the rest are black...

Or maybe they're just more on the spotlight?

Yes facial recognition has been used to somewhat explain racism by whites against blacks. I remember seeing a study about that. There is nothing wrong with understanding. It's great that we use our conscious minds too.

No offense, Max, but for someone who relies so heavily on faith, you are awful hard on a science that's so abstract.

i've never called my faith empirical...or measurable. i've never pretended i can prove my faith to you.

again..i'm uncomfortable with any study that suggests that someone's physical appearance is a determinant for how they will behave.

people's opinions about children change. their jawline doesn't change with that opinion.

I think there are other clues people pick up then the jaw line. Your face is made up of lots of muscles that do change and reflect your mood.

It seems that young children and some handicapped people have a real good sense of what people will be friendly to them and which won't -- just by looking at them. While there judgement isn't perfect --- it seems to be pretty accurate.
