sheesh. Is everyone running around with thin skin today? I thought we were just having a spirited debate. I didn't mean to hurt anyone’s feelings. Seriously maybe I should have thrown a couple of smiley faces so you guys didn't think I was trying to be mean.
crash, You misunderstood. You are arguing with the wrong person if you think I want to put "Ming" first (I only call him Yao because I do not know him so I don't use his given name). Only my first comment was directed to you - the rest was for anyone else, thus the "for all" comment. The thick-headed ass reference was in your posting dictionary defs, etc as if people do not know what first, last, etc. mean. This started because of redau saying to do Y.M. because Chinese don't use initials. The logic is obviously that initials are a Western thing, so why bother to respect Chinese tradition (especially when it does not exist in this instance) in such a case. That was all he was saying and you went off on some tirade about how he was wrong - saying your way was correct (which, technically, it wasn't) and ridiculous dictionary definitions. It is obvious that redau understood both contexts. Anyway, I don't really see the point in having to have an initial set for him. Oh, and the jersey comment was just in response to your Wang Zhi-Zhi post...which was wrong, just as all the people who mispronounce it and try to make it a phallic reference.
rimbaud, My dictionary references had nothing to do with redao, it was in response to Mini_GreatWall who insisted that Ming was Yao Ming's first name when it clearly is not. My tirade (as you put it) to redao consisted of two sentences and two letters. redao clearly took a jab by placing the initials MY in big red letters to make his point. So I made my two-sentence response and placed the letters YM in big red letters just as he had done. As I said earlier I felt that it was just spirited debate and nothing else. I was not offended when he took his jab and I assumed that he was not offended when I fired back. Regardless if I am right or wrong I felt then as I do now that here in the U.S. we assign the first letter of the initials to the first word of the name and the last letter to the last word with out regard to which is the surname. As a matter of fact this is the only instance that I am aware of that this was even a topic of debate, perhaps because we just assume that the people we meet use their last name as their surname. I don't really know what was offensive about the jersey comment. I thought that the Mav’s used Wang Zhi Zhi on the back of his jersey and I was wrong. It's as simple as that. fadeaway provided a picture as proof and that ended that real quick.
Yao Ming is the name and Yao Ming it will be! My chinese family told me thet they dont use initials, which is surprising because his Jersey said YAO M.
