Most recently, Gallup found 81% of Americans expressing belief when asked the simple question, "Do you believe in God?" This was down from 87% in 2017 and a record low for this question first asked in 1944, when 96% believed. It reached a high of 98% in the 1950s and 1960s.

Other Gallup questions asked most recently in 2016 and 2017 offered more response options than a simple "yes" or "no," and found a lower percentage -- 10 to 25 points lower -- expressing a belief in God.

    • In 2016, 79% of U.S. adults said God is "something [they] believe in"; 10% said it was "something [they're] not sure about"; and 11% said they didn't believe in God.
    • In 2017, Gallup found belief in God was even lower when confining it to those who are "convinced" God exists. In that poll, 64% of U.S. adults expressed certainty about the existence of God; 21% said God probably exists, but they have doubts; 6% said God probably doesn't exist; and 7% were convinced God doesn't exist.

People can tell a pollster whatever they want.

The notion 4/5 Americans believe in God or that 100% of Congressmen (Congresspeople?) believe in God is laughable.

The vast majority of people are go along and get along.

Pretending to be a Christian is still what is sociably advantageous by a long shot in the United States. That's changing slowly.

There is a huge amount of negative stigma attached to atheism/agnosticism.

METHODOLOGY: With the help of fellow UBC researcher Ara Norenzayan and University of Oregon's Azim Shariff, Gervais posed several hypothetical questions and scenarios to 350 American adults and nearly 420 university students in Canada.

RESULTS: Distrust, not disgust, is the motivation behind believers' antipathy against atheists. In one of the six trials, participants found a description of an untrustworthy person to be more representative of atheists than of Christians, Muslims, gay men, feminists, or Jewish people. Only rapists were distrusted to a similar degree.

    and this

Before COVID-19 made its devastating presence felt, 21.1 percent of American Catholics attended Mass every week, according to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate. That was nothing to brag about, compared with 54.9 percent in 1970, but it looks positively hearty next to the 12 percent or so projected for the post-COVID era.

Not attending mass is a mortal sin according to Catholic theology.. attending weekly mass is a requirement.. if you really believed in God and the Catholic faith... I mean, really believed... you are cool with just brushing that off? Estimates are now that only 12 percent of Catholics attend weekly mass... What does that really tell us? The vast, vast majority don't really believe... that's the truth of it.

I don't know much about Roe V Wade and how it led to abortion being legal based on privacy.

I'm pro choice. I haven't stated an opinion on the overturning because the thread was so long.

To me the challenge of locking down abortion rights is that the pro choice side can't prove life doesn't begin at conception. It's not about heartbeats and feeling pain.

We define life in terms of growth. Growth begins at conception. Life is theoretical concept as well as physical

    See the Torah disagrees

we also dont issue birth certificates to fertilized eggs.

Abortion will never be solved...half the country sees an abortion as taking a **** and the other half sees it as the Holocaust

I hereby propose and Amendment to the Constitution and also the TX State Constitution. "The Constitution shall be the law of the land and not the Bible or any similar work."

Not a chance when more than 65% of the people in this country don't believe in religion.

Another sign will be if Trump all of a sudden claims to accept Jesus and starts saying "God Bless" all the time and attending church. He might even have a public confession that he cheated on one of his tax returns and maybe have a baptism live on the Christian Broadcast Network.

I still remember when Ronald Reagan one of the first to get 80% of the Evangelical vote forgot to attend church even once in his first say 6 months and an advisor had to advise him to do so immediately and very publicly, of course.

Those who identify with a political party are much more predictable.
