Ask TCU who is better between Utah and Oklahoma and you'll get the same answer pretty much every time. The people who think Utah should be the national champion this year are probably the same people who were screaming for Hawaii to be in the national championship last year and we saw how right they were. And a 3 point win against New Mexico? Didn't A&M beat New Mexico worse than that? I repeat TEXAS A&M.
Really? They can just go and join a "real" conference just like that? I mean, if they want to be in the BIG 12 they can just join? Just go...hey...we want in ...thanks!
It counts when you don't finish with the only undefeated season in FBS. Utah was undefeated, so I only care about their SOS, which was impressive enough.
They even tried to join the Pac-10 when they decided to go from 8 to 10, so you can't say they didn't try.
Just out of curiosity, if Jim Tressel hadn't foolishly called for a blitz at the end of the game and the Longhorns lost, would you have been starting a thread about how the Big 12 doesn't deserve to be a big time conference anymore? Missouri barely winning, Tech losing, Texas losing to a team from that conference which shouldn't even be considered a real conference according to you??? Utah is NOT the best team in the country. However, in our current system I would vote them number 1. Because if they are not number 1, you admit that are hundreds of teams that you are saying have ZERO shot at ever winning a national title. Furthermore, I seem to remember you campaigning for Texas by saying that Florida lost to Ole Miss which was a bad loss in your mind. Well guess what Cat? Ole Miss beat Texas Tech which was the only loss for Texas. Maybe your beloved Big 12 isn't the super-power giant you think it is. Edit: I'm sorry if this sounded snappy. I'm having a bad afternoon.
Yeah, because one narrow loss in a BCS game (and a potential 4-3 record in bowls, how awful) would equal five consecutive complete embarrassments (2007 Rose, 2007 NC, 2008 Rose, 2008 NC, 2009 Rose) in BCS games. Yeah, same thing. I have no problem admitting that. First of all, playing Texas Tech with Michael Crabtree walking on one leg isn't exactly the same team Texas played in Lubbock on Nov. 1. Second, even with the loss, Tech still had a clearly superior season to Ole Miss. Finally, even if you disagree with the former, there are two spots in the national title game. Even if you find Florida to be more deserving than Texas based on the Ole Miss win in the Cotton, there's still the issue of Oklahoma, a team with an identical record and nearly identical schedule to Texas who lose to Texas by double digits head-to-head on a neutral site. Hopefully some of this will die down when OU wins by 2+ touchdowns tomorrow night...
I haven't looked at all of the teams and records, but I'd argue that the Mountain West is closer to a "real conference" than the Big East, Big 10, and maybe the ACC.
By your logic, Texas should withdraw from the Big 12, as should other power teams. Load up on good but not great teams (the TCU/BYU types, who have the fundamentals and weak conferences to have a good record and a top 10-20 season, but don't have the athletes to hang with elite teams), go undefeated, and as long as your SOS crosses a certain threshold, you win the title. Your system absolutely gives zero incentive to go out and schedule elite opponents, or play in power conferences.
The MWC is very top heavy, but is still weaker overall than all the BCS conferences. On a side note....I think their best teams this year were better than the three conferences you listed.
This line of thought bothers me. Texas Tech doesnt have the discipline to go the whole season and ever be a real contender. HOWEVER, beating an undefeated hyped up tech in lubbock is very hard, in fact an undefeated Texas Tech hasnt lost at home in recent memory ( at least 10 years ). Beating a demoralized tech at the cotton bowl is a lot different. Florida lost at home, to ole miss. To any objective person that loss is worse than Texas losing in lubbock.
Including the winner of the 'national championship' game there will be 4 teams with a legitimate claim to the title. Playoffs now.
The MWC is definitely top heavy, but I would like to point out that Wyoming (finished 2nd to last in MWC) beat Tennessee... in Tennessee. I know Tennessee is a mess, but still... That's one of the worst teams (if not the worst) in the MWC beating one of the worst teams in the SEC on their field.
Utah deserves to be in the national game. I think their SOS speaks for itself. Their drubbing of Alabama is more fuel for the fire for a playoff. The monopoly needs to end.
