Finch should just be hired now. Making him wait is very stupid. He is more than ready to take the job now. He has been a true miracle worker with Great Britain's national program. He is more than ready right now for the job.

Because we, the adoring public, don't know does not mean that DM the GM does not know. I refuse to believe these are the rudderless Rox set to drift as the Bay's current takes them.

I, for one, may not be happy with the planned direction after I learn what it is but I plan on hearing what's what first.

I, for one, may just be content to 'develop' during the (hoped for) '11-'12 season and watch a savior arise from the ashes known as Lottoville. I do not want to be the best of the worst with 1st Round my ideal dream.

I have closed my mind to other realities and am hopeful that an amnesty will bring great possibilities to TheToyShop.

If I give you 10 statements about subjects you have no knowledge and tell you half are truths and half are not, can you definitively tell me which are the truths and which aren't when just about all the underlying information is hidden? No, of course not. That's why we have one week Frank is the front runner, then Casey is the front runner, wait... no... wasn't Mike Brown the front runner, too? Oh, and of course, now we have McHale the front runner. So tell me, which of these was, is, and/or were never correct. Or were they all correct?

Why? And why should I believe what you say over what anyone else would say reading between those same lines? This further leads to speculation about Morey and Les being cheap, Morey and Les wanting to tank for a couple of years to get higher draft picks, Morey and Les wanting to bring in a potentially good NBDL coach to "really" take over... conspiracy theories abound.

Are they wrong? Who knows. Maybe some are wrong, maybe some are right, but the problem with "reading between the lines" is that none of us are even remotely close to knowing what the lines in the book all are to read between them. I believe Woj's sources and he writes reliable stuff, I can consider what you're saying to be correct as well, but damn if I, you, or Woj can really tell, so I choose not to participate in suppositions as to why Morey and Les are doing what they're doing. And I definitely can't participate in some of these conspiracy theories.

Yes, pretty much any decision will have their proponents basically saying "in hindsight all things are self-evident".

    I, agree

That goes to show that a D-League coaching resume by itself even if successful is still not sufficient enough for an immediate NBA jump into a head coaching role. Need to have SOME prior experience in the NBA even if its only as a player to be an NBA head coach.

You are an extremist intentionally polarizing with no middle ground. EVER. But I'll agree that if Finch is the guy, just hire him. Rockes look like they're "taking a chance" but really the chance is in hiring Finch, not NBA lifer McHale.

If they are really looking to tutor Finch, then my guess is that Morey really doesn't want to saddle him with the losses that will mount as they go young, as the guy who builds the team is always fired for the guy that come in to finish the job.

If Finch was brought in now, and they played TWill and Thabeet and PPat etc, and lost a bunch of games, people would say he was doing a lousy job, but McHale will come in, or someone like him...take the money, do his best and move out of the way when the org decides they are ready.

    My. 02 on it.

He should start now. He built up Great Britain's national team from something that did not even currently exist, and when it did in the past, was one of the worst in the world, and easily the worst in Europe........

in just a few short years into a program that is capable of not only playing at the EuroBasket, but of actually being competitive there.

Everyone brags about how Spain won EuroBasket 2009 and Pau was MVP, but they seem to be unaware that Spain was almost eliminated by Great Britain in the group stage. Spain got some gift calls by the refs in the last few minutes and was allowed to pass through, past the group stage.

The job that Finch has done with the British Basketball program is truly amazing. And if you watch the games, he out coaches everyone, every single time, every single game. And the EuroBasket is a way hell of a lot higher level than the NBA D-League is, or ever will be, and some of the coaches you are going against there are much better than numerous NBA coaches are.

I honestly have no doubt at all in my mind that Finch could coach circles around recent Rockets coaches like Van Gundy and Adelman.

Don't know, and I don't have any specifics on this, but (just a guess) maybe he wouldn't be fired but rather would be transferred Don Nelson-style to being a team consultant. TV analysts get paid well, but nothing like coaches or execs I imagine.

I think it's pretty clear that they're looking for Art Howe.

Dude, you're obsessed ... getting a top 5 draft pick. How about signing a decent coach (read: much better than McHale) and trading up in the draft?
You can trade a package with several good/young players like CBud, Martin, Lowry, Scola, several draft picks for a high top 3 draft pick and still be in the running for a playoff spot next year or the year after ...

So I'd rather take a shot with Frank as HC and providing him with assistants like Mario Elie, Sam Cassel and/or Finch.

I'm really starting to believe Morey wants to tank next season. The 2011 NBA draft is gonna suck. All of the good players are holding out for the 2012 NBA draft with the possibility of a lockout ensuing next season.

    Just look at this list:
    http://www.nbadraft.net/2012mock_draft

I'm open to trading anyone for 2012 picks.

That Memphis pick could be huge.

I don't think McHale,Casey,Frank or anyone else are wanting to be puppets, scapegoats etc. They probably think that they can do a good job. I feel McHale isn't likely to be a successful interim coach, let alone a long term one. He has limited experience at this job and had to over rely on his assistants in Minnesota.

It took McMillan a long time to transition from a player into a full time coach for example.

Tom T was an assistant for years before becoming a head coach.
Frank and Casey have been coaching for a long time too. I feel somewhat underwhelmed by Frank though.
I think Casey is the best choice of the 3,and might be a success over 2-3 years.

Not true. Phil Jackson was making $6m when JVG got hired. He asked for $12m the summer after losing to the Pistons and didn't get it...then Rudy took over.

The average nba coach salary was $3.4m in 2010. I'm sure it was even lower back then. Not sure you can say the Rockets low-balled JVG at $4m in 2003.

If McHale is a manager type that relies on his assistants, sort of like football or baseball, who can he bring in as positional coaches? How is his relationship with Bird? What could bird do with TWill and Budinger? What kind of arguments or attitude would TWill be able to float in front of Larry Bird? I am assuming CBud could be star struck enough to just follow along with just about anything Bird would ask.

    Just a couple of thoughts.

Bird is the president of basketball operations for the Indiana Pacers so I doubht he would agree to assistant coach. But I do agree that Mchale is so well liked and successful as a player that he can probably get good assistant coaches that will help him a ton

Thanks, I had thought Bird had stepped further back than that.

This was the only scenario I could think of, but then I think, "what kind of consulting would McHale give you?" He's not a proven great coach or a coach with a long history like a Nelson or Brown and he's not a great GM from what I've seen and read. Maybe he's a "people person, dammit!" Maybe he can interface with the players easier. Who knows.

Part of me is still kind of ticked Adelman isn't around, I guess...

My comments were really directed at people who say this is a stop-gap until Finch is ready. I was trying to figure out who would want the job for a couple of years to train somebody. If Finch is the golden-child, then I'd be worried my neck was on the block from the very outset. Hell, they just canned Adelman, so who the heck are Frank, McHale, and Casey to think they may just be temporary fill-ins?

Probably not Frank and Casey, but McHale is maybe willing to take a cheap 2-year deal just to get back into the game and build up some credibility as a NBA head coach.
