I don't think we ever had a chance to compete with Detroit's offer.

Giving SVG control over roster moves would be a mistake for the Rockets. So no... they aren't making a big mistake.

However, there was never any indication that Dwight, SVG, Morey, Les, etc. were all on the same page with mutual interest anyways.

We know the Rockets had interest in SVG years ago, but nothing as of lately makes me believe the Rockets have put him into serious consideration.

I love SVG as a coach, but as far as running the team from a roster standpoint, he'd scare the hell out of me just as other coach-first type of guys would as well. If you needed to turn around your team by letting go of veterans you trusted could you do that? Could you play the high-upside player over your veteran who is over the hill? Could you refrain from trading your draft picks for what would seem like win-now moves? Etc. Etc.

Personally I think another year could open up more coaching possibilities for the Rockets that might work out better in the long run. Tom Thibs could be an option in the future, maybe an up and comer presents themselves. Who knows.... but right now it seems to be more of the same ole guys that really dont make a ton of sense to me both in the long run and short run.

What you say is usually true; coaches tend to be short-sighted because their jobs are insecure. But SVG is also the team president. He knows he won't fire the coach, so he may be more willing to take a longer view.

    Dwight can't waste another year.

Stan seems like a smart guy, but you gotta understand that he's in the trenches with the guys every day. A coaches loyalty can really make it tough to make the hard decisions a GM has to make. I think the deal is for 5 years. Lets say he gets to year 3 1/2. He might make some moves that wont impact the team financially until 3 years from that point on because he's thinking about winning in the next two years more than anything. Maybe that's not the worst thing in the world for the fans and that team for those 2 or 3 years, but there definitely could be conflict of interest down the road.

Your right about Dwight. But what happens if the coach they bring in is a horrible fit for Dwight. Dwight has clashed with coaches before over style of play and personality fit before. With Dwight and the coaching situation, I think McHale is a safe bet to get a decent year out of Dwight. Now... the rest of the team and in the playoffs... that has yet to be seen. Bringing in another coach would have been much more high risk/high reward both for the team and Dwight.

By the way... I'm not a McHale fan at all as a coach, and think he's bottom 10. However the coaching staff as a whole at the beginning of the year was fairly decent by committee. I'm ok keeping McHale as long as he has a strong supporting staff. If they aren't bringing in anyone up to par with Sampson or better than keeping McHale is a mistake. The guy obviously needs help.... so I guess we will just have to wait and see what kind of people they put around him this next year.
