Are the Rockets better than they supposed to be? e.g., is JVG making bigger impact?

I know many of you expected us to win at least 46+ games, but
with only FOUR games remaining, and it doesn't look like we can win more than two of those games, do any of you still think JVG did a better job than Rudy T?

when jvg came in he said the rockets' problems were not due to a lack of coaching. i would say the same thing now.

Even sleepwalking through games, Eddie Griffin provided Rudy T alot more than Spoon provides JVG. He gave Rudy a third shot blocker, a third center option.

I love what Spoon brings, but I would rather have last year's E.G. on this team.

There is not a chance EG would be able to survive under JVG. Can you image a PF who loves outside shooting, doesn't like the physical contact under JVG?:D Not a chance!

i think the impression was that rudy was running a loose ship and his "player's coach" mentality was not getting through to our youthful troops. management thought jvg's reputation for discipline would translate into more responsible play on the court. our team is actually less talented this year, with the exception of yao's improvement, and steve francis has proven to be uncoachable. jvg is no saviour but it's not his fault. i think the blame goes to the players.

    Kidding right?

    mistakes:

    EG > Spoon
    Posey >= JJ
    Hawkins >= AG
    FRANCIS > FRANCIS

Next time try not to be so biased in one coach's favor.

    Rudy is a good coach
    Jeff is a good coach

Rudy's style was to build confidence, chemistry and ride the strengths of his players.

Jeff's style is to build discipline, toughness and ride the strength of good execution.

Both styles will work. They need time and the right players because both coaches can get the job done.

Rudy's style was perfect for Hakeem. Any dominant player would flourish under Rudy.

Jeff's style is good when players play smart and play hard regaredless of their own skill set.

The styles are both effective but they are extremely different.

In fact they are so different I am shocked at the progress made this year and I realize much more how much adjustment has been made on the team.

Most opposing coaches have commented that the Rockets do play tough defense (at least most of the season). It is recognized that they are much more salty defensively than years past. The statistics probably don't tell the whole story because circumstances change from year to year in the league.

I think the Rockets are much further along than where they probably should be considering the change that took place in coaching.

Steve has be out of kilter all year. Yao has had alot to learn in year two. Jim Jackson is a different player that was added to the mix. Cato was our starting PF. The offense and defense is completely new. New coaching staff.

We are probably way ahead defensively and much further behind offensively.

If Steve and Jeff could work out differneces, Steve give a much stronger buy in to the system, Yao continue to improve I would expect much more improvement next season.

Jeff Van Gundy is making his biggest impact by just being Jeff Van Gundy.

He is not anywhere near Rudy in style.

That's not wrong. They are just different.

So you are saying JVG is the wrong coach for this team, but he is not the one to blame? We had the team with its roster at the begining of the season, JVG took the job because both he and the Rockets management believed he could do better with the current roster. But the fact is he hasn't be able to get this team better, that's the end of the argument.

If you blame the players now, why don't blame the players under Rudy?

You mistaken the argument here. I think the original poster's intend was to compare the different players with the exception of Yao, who is supposed to be better since he was a rookie last year. Francis performed differently due to the systems each coach brings, so that shouldn't be in the equation.

Here's the thing about JVG and Steve- I honestly don't think JVG has a problem with Steve's attitude. Knowing what I know about many New Yorkers as a former resident, and based on JVG's own comments, I don't think he minds that Steve opposes him on certain things- as a matter of fact, he said Sprewell did the same thing with him, and he appreciated the candor. JVG has no problem being held responsible for his actions. However, I think Steve definitely has a problem with his attitude. With all the technicals, his comments on JVG, his comments from last year, I think Steve Francis expects things to go his way, and when they don't, he uses excuses and blame- even more so this year. I can distinctly remember him taking the blame for 1-2 losses last year- has he even done that once this year? No.

I suppose Van Gundy could ease up a little, but based on comments, observations, and actions, I think the large majority of this problem falls on Steve's shoulders.

IMHO, I think Van Gundy is the coach needed for this kind of team, I think he will weed out certain players during the summer.

I loved Rudy to death and think that his style work much better with veteran players. Our team needed structure and I think Van Gundy has done a good job of bringing that to the table.

I think we are a more sound team with Van Gundy and I think once he gets rid and brings the players of his choosing, we will see much better results.

Next year this time, if we are still discussing the same issues we are this year, then we have a problem.

A interesting thing . . . . Why did Ed got ballistic this year and not last year. . . .
Perhaps Rudy's touchy feely style was better than the
hard nose tought JVG style. . .

Player Management - Rudy > JVG

    wrong team ... right coach
right team ... wrong coach ..... no real difference between the two

if ole man Grumpy lacks the imagination to diversify the uni- dimentional offense, he's surely the wrong coach for this team.

stamina, fouls and an inability to establish post position will render our main offensive threat ineffective at times. it seems silly to keep suggesting we trade away a viable alternative.

    Umm, it's not in doubt.

    It's called ACCOUNTABILITY.

And Steve doesn't seem to want it, unlike JVG.

Do you mean when JVG said his team didn't play with heart or when he quit on the Knicks?

I think we are better against the team we are supposed to take care of, but not by much. We are worse against elites. Bear in mind, JVG is molding this team from outside-in to the other way around.
