In all honesty, I think Tupac might be one of the greatest musical acts of all time. His music is a timeless classic and even young kids today enjoy his music when they are introduced to his anthology. And this is coming from someone who isn't even a fan of the genre much anymore.
I think Mudhoney influenced Nirvana more than any band imo. It's pretty easy to pick up the similarities. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LAkJjtmUVgg&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LAkJjtmUVgg&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
The Beatles are really in their own category. I mean, at one point, they held 5 of the top 6 spots in the Billboard 100. No one's even come close to touching that. Look at their solo careers- all 4 members have had #1 hits solo, including several each from Lennon and McCartney, at least 3 from Harrison, and 2 from Starr. That's just ridiculous. Whatever they did, they had the magic touch. I mean, there are great bands for all different types of things- The Who was the best live band, Yes was the best progressive rock band, U2 was the best New-age band or whatever title you slap on them, etc. (all of the above IMHO). Like the other poster said, it's all how you define greatness. I do know that if I had to pick one band to represent the greatness of rock and roll in terms of popularity, musicianship, songwriting, influence on other bands, and effect on popular culture, I'd have to pick The Beatles. They may be overhyped, but that doesn't excuse the fact that they were the most significant impact on rock and roll for all the reasons mentioned above. All that being said, I would think that anyone could make a case for Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and some select others. But you can't forget the holy trinity of rock and roll: Presley, Berry, and Holly.
No debate- they are the greatest rock band of all time... not the hardest rockers, not the greatest musicians, the greatest rock band... why? too many incredible songs for the ages they moved rock into the mainstream they stayed start to finish unquestionably at the top of the rock world they broadened rock music - use of technology, new instruments, non standard melody and beats not that they did everything better than all the rest, they just flat out set rock music into the soul of the world. every album just flat added something to their legacy and their songwriting still ranks at the top and probably always will
I have always read that Elvis was given co-writing credits on his 50's songs for publishing reasons, but like you said, he did all those other things when it came to recording his songs.
300 years from now? You must have not watched the show on ABC last night called "Earth 2100" because if you had, you would know that no one is going to be around 300 years from now.
Seriously?? You must not get out much. Mozart has been played in cities great and small, by all levels of musicians for 250-some years. One of the first solos I ever played, in the 7th grade and on a saxophone, was by Mozart. I'm not arguing whether or not the Beatles are influential. Hell yes they are. Probably more so than any pop act the world has ever seen. Or ever will see, for that matter. As for what kinds of music Mozart influenced, the answer is this: all of them. And not to rag on you, but if you can't understand this, you have a VERY limited understanding of music as a whole.
Damn I was about to say that. I think the beatles and Nirvana are the 2 bands to single-handedly change the music scene from one genre, to the next. Or atleast, bring it to mainstream media.
Musically, how much of the Beatles songs were purely composed by the four band members? Was there significant musical collaboration between them and their producer, George Martin, for instance? I know that keyboard interlude in the middle of In My Life was composed by George Martin, for instance. That's my favorite part of the song.
Music, like all art, is inherently subjective. A musician, a band, a song, etc. cannot be objectively measured as good or the best. It is all just a matter of personal taste. So the answer to your question is no. I personally do not care for the Beatles, so they would not top my personal list either.
Yeah. Nintendo's version of mk didn't have any blood. =( Speaking of "speaking of", the John lennon docudrama, "U.S vs. John lennon" will be showing tonight on VH1Classic.
Oy. You still don't get it. I'll give you a hint: I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever. Well duh. Mozart will always be there. I know how influential Mozart has been; don't be so quick to assume ignorance. But I do believe that The Beatles will have influenced music to an extent that, after a LOT of time, they'll be revered much the same way we revere Mozart.
