IMO, yes. There are many other bands I listen to more than The Beatles, but based on their body of work and the impact they had around the world, I'd say they are the greatest of all time.
greatest in terms of most r****ded looking haircuts ever. No they are not... Led Zeppelin def 0wnz the Beatles.
The same for me - they had an enormous influence on popular music and I have all their albums but they are not one of my favorites.
Manny and SWT, I'm too influenced by the groups I saw perform, and the Beatles were a group I didn't see in concert. I freely admit that it could be a flaw on my part, however.
people really.. really.. should stop quoting these famous words out of Cobain's mouth.. fact: their sound didn't come close to sounding like the Pixies.. ever.. and that passing comment to his approach to music.. isn't an isolated incident.. the man was constantly deflective of any attempt to praise his music with overzealous credit.. which he was getting tons of at the time.. it was just his character.. for instance Smells Like Teen Spirit: "we just wanted to sound like the Pixies" About A Girl: "I wanted it to sound like a Beatles song" Bleach album: "wanted to sound like Aero Smith meets Led Zeppelin" Drain you: "wanted it to be like our 'We Won't Be Fooled Again' " etc etc.. now honestly.. do any of them.. even come close to sounding like the respective Band/s.. mentioned..? let it go..
actually.. few a people here.. have shown the truly objective way to critique music.. more or less.. it is possible.. however.. Mozart..? i'm going to assume that was tongue in cheek by the OP...
I agree with this one right here. I think the question is too complicated and too broad. If we are talking culture and modern day musicians (last 40 years)...I think they're on a short list with Elvis, the Rolling Stones, and Michael Jackson for those things you mentioned. Trailing, you've got people, like Queen, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Led Zepplin, and a few others. Historically (in terms of world history), I'm not sure...but I think that may go to Mozart or Beethoven. I like how you mentioned, influence (popularity and ripped off factor), music itself, live acts, sales, and cultural impact.
he's credited as being co-writer/composer of hit songs such as "All Shook Up", "Love Me Tender" and "Don't be Cruel"... but whether it was simply for publishing reasons.. or if he actually did.. is an uncertainty.. he was however, heavily involved in the recording process in several of his early songs.. and arrangement process in several of his post-rockabilly songs.. and gospel adaptations..
i'm not too sure on including the Rolling Stones.. really they come quite short.. of matching the overall cultural and musical influence.. and worldwide impact.. of whom i consider to be the big three.. Elvis, The Beatles and Michael Jackson..

Nope. Sure wasn't. You might think it was, but I really do mean ALL-TIME. The Beatles vs. That Guy Who Smashed One Rock Into Another Rock Rhythmically. I'm not talking about greatest in the rock 'n' roll era. I'm not talking about greatest in the last 100 years. I'm talking about the greatest ever. Of all-time. Ever ever ever. Influence is a part of it, yes. But I believe that when 300 years pass, The Beatles will prove they were more influential than Mozart.
In terms of Revolutionary and paving the way for bands to experiment with different instruments in songs and still get a no.1 album on the charts they'd be the greatest of all time.
In all the years I've been on this BBS, this is by FAR the most insane thing I've ever read here. And I like the Beatles quite a bit.
Rock/pop music has thrived and taken over the world. It's played in virtually every major country on the planet. 300 years from now, if rock/pop music is still played, The Beatles will still be influencing bands. And if it's not, the music that comes up will undoubtedly be influenced by rock/pop just how many kinds of music were influenced by Mozart.
The Beatles were bigger than Jesus, so I vote yes. I think the Beatles were far more influential than anything else. Their songs and their studio work have set the standard for almost everything that has come after. As far as I'm concerned, Bob Dylan's output until about 1970, maybe 1968, is greater than Elvis and the Beatles, but there is no doubt he was influenced by both to an extent.
Beatles had some great songs, but I can't put them at greatest. Plus they got nothing on the backstreet boys, do you see the Chinese lip syncing to the Beatles? And in the current music scene I bet little jon has had more influence than the beatles.
Don't get the Beatles. Don't get Nirvana. Don't get Mozart. Get Pearl Jam. Get Tupac. Get Rage Against the Machine. So sue me.
