I've been to a few countries in Africa. I have taken photos of what people can do to others...there are different types of evil. I saw a kid murder an old woman in the street. People just walked on by some stared others did nothing. (When I say kid...9-10 TOPS!). It's amazing how little is known about what actually happens in OTHER conflicts. The media is nowhere to be found. Combat, breeds good and bad people. The drug market in Africa breeds Monsters! I should really write a book.
I love how post-modernism means we can no longer discuss anything because none of us know the meaning of words anymore.
If you want to seek truth, I recommend the scriptures of St. Augustine on this topic. " If the activity of the will in turning away from god is without a doubt a sin, can we say that god is the cause of the sin?"
Yes, people are evil. What makes you think these people aren't evil? Sure, they've done good things, but I'm sure they've all done bad things as well.
yeah because who is to say what is evil? Someone made up what is evil. Therefore I reject the question. For instance : "causing harm" causing harm to what? I eat a carrot I just killed it. Am I evil? I just ate a hamburger. Evil? Some would say so some would say not. Arguing about if humans fit a varying set of morals is impossible. No one can even agree WTH evil is.
I think we can reach some consensus on a few items. I'm not sure we have to make language obsolete because we can't get 100% buy in for all potential qualifiers. Your post reminds me of a formal written objection to a discovery request.
If "WE" is this BBS I am sure we can. If "WE" is all humans I really doubt it. Language is not obsolete but "evil" is more of a religious word than anything.
Humans are self interested that is all the issue is to what extent to they evaluate their self interest Example: We can collectively keep our money and enjoy what we buy with it. . . . meanwhile a kid without any money or resources goes with out. NOW We have made some short term gain and enjoyment Long term. that kid turns to selling drugs becomes a criminal and ends up murdering us. Well in the long term . . our original keeping our money did not serve our long term self interests . . only our short term self interest Good and Evil can be seen in those types of terms Even Hitler 'thought' he was doing good . . . he was simply WRONG!!! VERY WRONG!! very few people *think* they are evil or that they doing evil [folx like Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer] Rocket River
I don't think "evil" is only a religious term. It is, however, tied to someone's personal morals (which are similar with people of the same faith). As RR stated, very few people think they are doing evil because they have a different set of morals. Who decides what is right or wrong? I can only think of one.
