You guys SERIOUSLY are wanting BOB COSTAS. Remember how many times "MICHAEL JORDAN" was mentioned every time the Rockets Championships came up? At least KENNY TALKS ABOUT HOUSTON.
More important facts: #1 The Rockets don't have any titles without the contributions of Kenny Smith. (We needed everyone to come together to beat Phx, NYK, Utah etc--Kenny was a major contributor) #2 We don't get to the 1997 WCF if it wasn't for Barkley. Both because of his force on the boards, dissection of Seattle, and because he accepted a low salary so we could load up with other players. If you want to blame someone for that "failure" (how much of a failure was it considering the year pre-Barkley we got swept earlier in the playoffs) blame our front office for not signing a vet PG like Porter or Derrick Harper. That is what I say to those around here who Chuck and Kenny seem to get a rise out of. Loosen up fellas--it is their job to entertain and be outlandish--they don't even take themselves very serious, why should you get your panties all up and tight from what they say. Let's see: A) Pippen quit and pouted while on the team, called out his teammates he worked with after he left, and forced a low ball trade upon the Rockets where the franchise couldn't get good value in return. B) Barkley as a public commentator not involved with the current team hasn't given the current Rockets, Tmac and Yau their due, but maybe is finally convinced that this could be a really strong team. So he is a little slow catching on and needs to hit by a mack truck to see what is obvious (the Rockets are formidable)--he is just a media jockey who himself doesn't take his opinions too seriously. Yeah, B is sooooo much worse than A. I completely disagree. I am glad Tinman calls this folks out for being a hypersensitive bunch of pansies. They created a poll about why those two “hate” the Rockets with no option for “maybe they don’t hate the Rockets and are just having fun and you need to pull your panties out of your you know whats”. The TNT show is all in good fun and the best sports post-game show around--they are even giving the Rockets lots of props and people around here are even more acting like jilted school girls than when they didn’t seem to think the Rockets were very formidable. I am sure the Rockets players could care less about the TNT booth--they even joke about it--it is all in good fun and good for the NBA and fairly entertaining.
^^^what in the world does that mean? you defend Kenny b/c he said yao was the best player on the Rockets when Francis was here. so you think that makes him a hero...and of course, b/c he played for the Rockets. this is the same Kenny who criticized the Rockets for picking Yao Ming in the first place. but you're so blinded by your homerism, you only see the "good".
5 Star Thread. I did not like the Barkley trade - the single point in which I disagreee with tinaman on anything ever. He was a fat 3 point specialist who shot 16% from beyond the arc. He made it his team, and that was not awesome. Tinman - my sacred brother - how can you reconcile your love for Charles with your love for Horry, Cassell, Kenny, Chucky and all else that was involved in those championships? We traded young for old. We traded four for one (five if you include Kenny, who we did not re-sign, so I lump him in). We traded thin for fat. We threw our Championship Karma into a king sized toilet. BAD MOVE. BUT BUT BUT. Here is why i love Charles 2.0. 1) Charles 2.0 apologized for his disrespect of Chucky Brown on national TV when Ernie Johnson asked him directly about the CBFC karma theories posted on the web. Public apology accepted.Am I being self aggrandizing here? YES. But is it the truth? YES. 2) Charles 2.0 always sings the praises of the Hakeem Era Rockets. Always. He lets no one forget. He props Rudy T and the whole gang. He has done a ton for the legacy of our championship teams. 3) Charles 1.0 was a great Rocket, but mostly on the years he was in phoenix. If he had not done 1 - 10 in Game 5 or 6 (i forget), in 1995, we lose. If he does not a activate Chucky Brown Karma, we lose. If he does not get overconfident two years in a row, we lose. He was a great Rocket 1993-95. 4) Charles 2.0 is actually hilarious and awesome and candid as a commentator.
Another good point. Costas was not bearable during those years. "Hakeem Olajuwon with 65 rebounds, definitely more than if Michael Jordan was here." He was like John Cusak in better off dead - "Beth Beth Beth." "Jordan Jordan Jordan."
Just seeing the words "Detlef Shrimp" on my screen makes me something something... Go Crazy? Don't mind if I do!! That was brisket? I thought it was green been casserole...
it was a joke. like i said before, i like Kenny and Charles. i'm just tired of these stupid thread cluttering up the GARM so i just post in them to humor myself. tinman's lovefest for all players from Houston is funny.
what if Charles was sick and Magic replaced him? "Like Kenny Said.." "HAHAHA Thats right Kenny!" "Ernie you know.." "Like Kenny Said.." "HAHAHA Thats right Kenny!" "Ernie you know.." "Like Kenny Said.." "HAHAHA Thats right Kenny!" "Ernie you know.."
CBFC, great post but I have a couple of cavouts. #1) Barkley didn't make the trade. The Rockets front office did. If you think value was poor it wasn't Charles fault. (But I do seem to recall we lost a better trade, like a 3 way involving Deke/Denver and only costing us a couple of players instead of 4--because some leak brought the NBA spotlight on us, though I am fuzzy on the details) #2) When Barkley came here he did not make it his team. He clearly deferred to Hakeem as the go to guy while he shot less and boarded more than he had done in Phx. He did a good job adjusting his game to Hakeem and the Rockets. The chief problem for those teams was the woefull PG spot and I think some solid vets like Harper and maybe Terry Porter were available as FAs or for small trades and we did nothing (either would have been excellent, at least enough to get us by Utah and in the finals in 97)
OK, got where you are coming from--probably Chuck and Kenny would get a chuckle from you as well. I just appreciate tinman's lovefest more than the girly hatefest against those Rockets just having a good time--and many around here at least seem genuine that Charles Barkley is public enemy #1, instead of say, actual Texas competition like Dirk & Duncan or slimeballs like Bowen, Howard, Terry, Man-y Floppanobili, etc. You know, actual players that may be actual obstacles to winning a championship.
Tinman, I've sided with you in defending Maxwell many times. However, I never hear Maxwell hate on our current Rockets. For the longest time I've given Kenny and Charles a pass because I presumed they were just doing their job as commentators, it has become more and more obvious that they really don't want to see Houston succeed. I'm starting to wonder if Kenny wants to be from the only two teams to win us a championship and Charles doesn't want to see us accomplish something he was unable to accomplish when he was here. (but then, he doesn't seem to have a problem with Phoenix) So yeah, I'm getting to the end of the line with those guys. They're starting to get to me with all of their nay-saying.
Remember when we were ahead 2-0 on the Mavs a couple years back? They were ready to annoit them "THE NEXT KOBE AND SHAQ". Maybe they dont want to overreact again until we actually win a series. Then again, what have done to make news? its what's the hot topic at the time. When Yao vs Shaq I came, the hype was amazing. so they talked about them more. Now Kobe is dropping 50pts a game, so that's the hot topic to chat up.
So is it okay to hate on Drexler the terrible color analyst? Who's done MORE to make Clutch City clutch than Barkley? Barkley's overconfidence and sub par performances in the playoffs helped the Rockets on their way. But it was Drexler and the team he was on that capitalized off of that. Just asking the question. Cuz I didnt expect any objective thinking like that on Clyde
