I know this was covered earlier in this thread, but can someone post a link to instructions on how to unlock the iPhone 3Gs with 4.0 software? My iPhone isn't currently jailbroken. Thanks! (I advertised my iPhone to be unlocked on my Craigslist ad...meeting the buyer in a few hours, so now I need to unlock it )
You need a mac in order to do it. http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ Download pwnage tool 4.0.1 and it's self explanatory after that... unlocking is with ultra snow and you can go to ultrasn0w.com for instructions to that.
1) Learn english. 2) What do you propose they do? A recall? That's not going to happen with the amount sold... they can't even handle pre-orders. All I was saying was to stop b****ing and take the easy road by getting a case. It's as simple as that... why do you need to torture something that already has a solution to it. Yes, Apple made a mistake with the phone. Do you want a ****ing cookie?
I have a macbook. So pwnage tool is for jailbreaking, and ultrasn0w is for unlocking? I went to the ultrasn0w link you provided, and it only seems to have info for the iPhone 3G, OS 3.0. I'm trying to unlock an 3GS, OS 4.0. I'm about to sell this phone, and just need to unlock it.
Yup. That is correct. Should be easy for you. Pwnage tool 4.0.1 should take care of your jailbreaking once you plug the phone in... and then ultrasn0w will be installed from Cydia.
It is possible to jailbreak without unlocking. It is not possible to unlock without jailbreaking though (at least none of the methods I know of).
Sorry for all the questions, one more - The earlier link that was provided in this thread for jailbreaking (http://thetechjournal.com/electronics/iphone-electronics/jailbreak-ios-4-tutorial.xhtml); is this still accurate? I downloaded Pwnage and it created an IPSW (or something like that). It then said to turn on my iPhone in recovery mode and restore with the IPSW. All this might be obvious, but I have no idea what that means. Any step by step directions out there?
It allows you to get paid apps for free. You can also customize the OS. You can use things such as real multitasking, tethering, etc. That's the general concept of jailbreaking. No because that only worked for a short while. I did it on my iPhone 3Gs when that article was released. It doesn't seem to work now. Here are some step by step directions with Pwnage 4.0.1 : http://www.redmondpie.com/pwnagetool-4.0-jailbreak-ios-4-iphone-3g-3gs/
Bricking your iPhone (though it doesn't happen a lot) Your phone just being slow in general just because it cannot handle it (depends on what you use though, real multitasking would be a good example of this) Losing your warranty (though you can always restore your phone back to normal but you can't back up any of the apps and such that you had when you had it jailbroken). That's about it. Jailbreaking is pretty much something that enhances your phone and allows it to do so much more. The advantages exceed the disadvantages.
I followed the directions in the link, and had problems at this step: "Step 8: Once the .ipsw file has been created, you will now have to restore your iPhone to this custom firmware 4.0 that you just cooked using PwnageTool 4.0 for your iPhone or iPod touch. Click on your phone icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” button (“Shift” button on Windows) on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release the “Shift” button. This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your downloaded custom firmware 4.0. Select that custom .ipsw file and click on “Open”." There was no opton to "select the location for your downloaded custom firmware 4.0." I've never unlocked/jailbroken this phone before. Could that had something to do with this?
When you're in itunes, you hold shfft and click restore and it will open up a menu to browse for the firmware
Nothing happens when I push alt or Shift...I'm on a Mac. My iPhone currently has nothing on it (it's restored to it's factory settings). I'm just trying to unlock and jailbreak it before selling it later tonight.
Got that part to work now, but then I got error 1600 "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600)."
