I sold my iPhone 3g 8gb for 200 on craigslist about 2 weeks ago, and it was only jailbroken. If I were you, I would sell it asap before the value falls even more.
It's all screwed up now. At first I thought it may have been a small mistake with Apple and that they would release it on launch day with the blacks and you could go into a store and buy one, but now with some of these reports that have false claims of 2011... it may be a lot longer than I assumed. Here's the biggest reason. You cannot unlock baseband 5.12.01 and the majority of iPhone users jailbroken or not have this baseband. If you didn't upgrade to 3.1.3 software, your baseband was not updated and thus those iPhones can be unlocked. These are T-Mobile customers willing to pay $400-$500 for iPhones.... that's why it's like this. But, if it hasn't already released today it will release sometime this week -- the unlocking mechanism. I'm sorry to tell you this but you could've done much better. Even with a 16GB you should at least get $300. Unlocking a phone opens up a whole array of customers from T-Mobile... a big reason why this one is selling is because some T-Mobile customers are unaware of the fact that the iPhone 4 can be unlocked (they assume since theres a micro-sim, t-mobile doesn't have one and thus they cannot use that phone).
http://www.ihackintosh.com/2010/06/...-05-11-07-05-12-01-and-5-13-04with-ultrasn0w/ Yes now you can. They just released 5.12.01 today and 5.13.04 today (the iOS4 unlock). Before the problem was, YOU COULD NOT downgrade to 3.1.2 if you had 3.1.3 or higher because Apple had blocked it and there was no unlocking mechanism for 5.12.01 (3.1.3's baseband).
i don't think i want to sell my 3GS. I like all the software improvements though. here are the top hardware improvements: Better Display Better Camera with Flash and HD recording Faster Processor Dual Mic Noice Cancelling Wireless N 5.8-Mbps HSUPA 3-Axis Gyro I don't know if those features are enough to make me sell my 3gs for cheap and sign another 2 year contract with ATT. stupid question: unlocking and jailbreaking are 2 diff things right?
Yeah, it's not necessarily a HUGE upgrade from the 3Gs unless you really like video calling and HD video. The only reason I'm upgrading is because I know I'll be with AT&T for at least a good 5 more years. And yes, unlocking and jailbreaking are two different things. Unlocking is unlocking the carrier for your phone, while jailbreaking has do with unlocking the iOS software so you can add customizations to it.
I like the mid cycle updates better. like 3GS...or the next one after the iphone 4..u get a better product i think.
I'm kind of wondering how to actually activate tethering now...I went to my account on the ATT website, and I can't find that option. Is it because I have unlimited data?
You can't? Tethering isn't an option on unlimited data. Tethering is an option on the new 2GB data plan for $25. You have to pay an extra $15 on top of that though in order to use tethering. Push the home button twice and that should bring up the multitasking feature.
Man this is making my head hurt. So now I *should* upgrade to iOS4 if I plan on unlocking my 3G to sell it?
Thanks. I figured that out soon after submitting my post. At this point, tethering is certainly not worth giving up my unlimited data. I'm going to have to send some rep your way sir. You've been nothing short of a lifeboat in the tumultuous water that is this thread.
IIRC, even if you're on the "old" unlimited data plan right now, the tethering cap is at 5gb a month. I don't know about the "new" plans that's implemented from here on out though.
You can now, as the jailbreak for iOS4 for iPhone 3g has been released. I'm in the process of doing that right now so I'll update if it works correctly. As for tethering, there is an app through the Rock store (must be JBed) called MyWi that allows you to tether, and set up your iPhone as a wireless hotspot. It is currently not working for 4.0. http://rockyourphone.com/index.php/mywi.html
