Yeah from what I have read if your baseband is upgraded your going to have a hard time unlocking it at least for now. I am sure some things will catch up.
They've had 5.12.01 (which is the one for people who upgraded to OS 3.1.3) unlocked since February. But, they have been afraid to release it because Apple may come out with another baseband and just have that one locked up and it'll be harder to crack. They're supposed to release it sometime next week after iOS 4 releases on Monday. I honestly don't need need it for my iPhone 4... but I need to sell this 3Gs and the price diff between unlocked and lock is so substantial. T-Mobile customers will want the new iPhone but I'm not sure if regular SIM cards will work if you just break them to be smaller and then try to use them, so the iPhone 3Gs prices may not fall all that much.
There's actually a tool that's being sold right now that cuts the regular sim into microsim form and comes with an adapter if people want their microsim to revert back to regular sized form. It was on endgadget a few weeks back IIRC.
Maybe this is the reason for the lower battery life It's making me rethink on whether or not I'd want to upgrade to the OS4 since the battery life right now on my 3GS is ho-hum as it is.
Yeah, I'm just afraid that that SIM may not work with the phone. The iPad MicroSIM's don't work in the iPhone 4 according to Apple. But, yeah, it's worth a try. Yeah, I just read that actually. That's pretty amazing considering everyone was expecting 256 because the iPad has the same chip (A4). I'm hoping it's also 1GHz like the iPad.
Looks like iPhone to Verizon isn't dead just yet. http://www.appleinsider.com/article...dma_iphone_4_rumored_to_be_in_production.html
I plan to get the iPhone4 anyways but it's disheartening to find out that OS4 won't run as fluid on a 3GS as it would on the 4. Shoot, if OS4 is going to kill the battery life as well as run slower on the 3GS, then the black market value for the 3GS is going to dip even more IMO.
I would love to see it on Verizon since the service/coverage would be a lot better than AT&T but I kind of also want to see Verizon (and, to a lesser extent, Sprint) back Android as much as possible.
Well, it's actually kind of fast compared to 3.1.3. You can tell how much the "multitasking" helps when you're going back to an app that is "running". But yeah, it is disheartening to know that it will kill battery life if in fact this is pretty much how the final version is going to be. I'll be switching to Verizon in a year or two after my contract runs out if they do in fact have an iPhone or an Android phone that really amazes me.
Guess they figure everyone will eventually give in and get the iPhone 4. The OS must be optimized and made to work that much better on the iPhone 4 which has a different process, more memory, and a bigger battery.
Could the battery life be affected by the apps that are yet to be optimized for iOS4? I know some apps have already released their updates, but many haven't.
That may be it. No apps have been released yet... so I mean it's possible that it could be that. I mean, you really won't be able to judge on the 3Gs until it comes out on Monday and when you can test some apps like Pandora on it. Try launch day, in-store. Best bet in trying to get it... if they really are low on supplies, it'll just zip through on the net when it comes out.
There's no reason to judge apps and/or multitasking with iOS4 on a 3GS. None of the apps have been updated for it yet since it isn't technically released.
You can still judge it based on some of the things. But, yeah, you won't be able to judge the overall performance until you get the optimized apps.
