Here's my plan. Wait for 4G and iOS 4 to drop. If tethering is not an option on my unlimited plan, I will not upgrade to 4G or iOS4, and I will, in fact, roll back my 3G OS to 3.0.1 so that I can enable tethering that way by jailbreaking my phone. I have to tell you, I traveled around a lot this past summer to places with no internet, and having unlimited tethering was a GOD SEND. Internet, anywhere, anytime, no restrictions, for basically free. Suh-weet.
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-20007134-233.html Instead, here are the reasons I can't see rushing to upgrade just yet. 1. No unlimited data with tethering. As it's been widely reported, starting June 7, AT&T killed the once-mandatory unlimited data plan for the iPhone. Instead you can opt for the 200MB or 2GB plans that cost $15 or $25 a month, respectively. Of course you'll have to pay extra if you go over the limit. This, however, only applies to new subscribers. Existing iPhone users, like me, are grandfathered in. However there's a catch: you won't be able to use tethering, which requires a limited data plan plus another $20/month. AT&T says that tethering will be made available together with the iOS 4 (iPhone OS 4.0). It's ironic, however, that it won't be allowed on phones with existing unlimited data plan. Not a good deal.
It's easy to say that, but every version of iPhone after 3.1 hasn't had tethering unlockable, even through jailbreaking. It makes me worried that the same will be the case with iOS4, and more specifically, on 4G phones.
I absolutely HATE that dealing with this crap is made so god damned difficult to understand. It's deliberate. The hope is that you'll be so confused, as well as so delighted with your new toy, that you won't be able to comprehend the shaft being royally poked up your arse by AT&T, as well as Apple. Simplicity has become a dirty word.
ATT's data cap sucks, especially considering stuff like Netflix is now available. I'm definitely not moving from my unlimited plan. Sad thing is it wouldn't surprise me when the other carriers start following suit with their data plans. Also, for those of you not wanting to preorder, there are rumors that both Best Buy and even Walmart may have the phones for sale on launch.
Not very difficult at all! Apple will have one for about $29! And it will be pretty much as you described. lol.
And you can't wait to have the thrill of worrying about how much bandwidth you use via the iPhone and dear old AT&T. The excitement is unbearable! Right? You betcha!!
Well I've hit an issue at the moment. I wanted tethering. But I'm not giving up unlimited data to get it. Unlimited data is more important to me than tethering. Decisions, decisions. Eh, no big deal. I don't have to have it the first day it comes out or anything. I'll wait and see what goes down and what options I have with other carriers/phones, too by the time my AT&T contract expires in July. If needed, I could go month-to-month after that.
Just curious, but why do you stream from your phone and not your computer? I know some people who put in several hours a week on pandora, but never bust 2 gigs.
wow...really? damn, might have to re think getting an iphone then. how in the world do they say 65% of their users use less than 2 gigs, but just streaming music uses up that much....crazy.
If you are wondering how much data you use, you can log into your account at ATT and they give a graph about data usage for the last few months. Looks like the highest I've hit is 400-500mb. Whoa, what are you using to stream? I don't do any radio, just a lot of Internet and app downloading/using. Also the occasional song from iTunes.
so the new plans are 200 MB for 15 bucks and 2 GB for 25? is that confirmed? also for those with iphones already, do they have apps for free texting/is free texting possible?
