Holy hell! Apple's site is a lot easier to use than AT&T's cluster****! Thanks for mentioning that.

Anyway, it said I would be able to purchase the 16 GB iPhone 3Gs for $349 right now but if I wait until the 30th I can get it at the $149 price. I couldn't find where to enter this information for an eligibility check on the iPhone 4 but I am assuming it is the same. So I guess June 30 it is, right?

    +1 for you. Thanks!

So it applies to the iPhone 4 too?

Also, I have heard that most people don't use as much data as they think with smartphones because of Wi-Fi capabilities and that downgrading to one of the new data plans instead of keeping my uncapped plan would save about $15 off my bill every month. Should I keep my existing data plan or downgrade? Like I think with the current lowest level capped data plan they offer you get 150 MB-200 MB of data per month and this past month on my BB I used a whopping 12 MB of data. I just don't know if I'd use more with the iPhone or not though.

Yes, it would apply to the iPhone 4.

What I would do in your situation is review in your previous bills from AT&T how much data you have used over these last few months with your BB. Granted, your BB uses less data than an iPhone probably would, it would still give you a better idea of how much you really do use. If you're someone that downloads a few apps and doesn't use a lot of browsing on the go (meaning outside of Wifi spots), it's not bad to downgrade to the $15 dollar plan. For me, I know I use about close to 2 gigs each month. But, I'm willing to keep the unlimited for $5 extra just incase I ever go over.

If you want to see how much you use with the iPhone 4, keep the data plan for a month just to see how much you use, and then you can go from there

EDIT: Well then, you shouldn't need more than 150-200 MB. Most apps are around an MB or two. You should be fine under 200 MB. But like I said, you can experiment with it though I don't think you'll need the full unlimited by what you've just said.

I use about 500mb a month of data on my iphone.

On the months I enabled tethering (hax0r!) on my iphone, i used about 4-5gb on average.

So I'm definitely going to grandfather myself into the unlimited data plan.

Once tethering goes live, it will be virtually useless without unlimited data.

Sure I could save 5-10 bucks a month with the new plans, but it's not really worth it in the end.

For most people though, the 200mb cap will work fine for them. For everybody else, 2gigs should be more than enough.

I don't know what you'd have to be doing in order to burn through 2gigs a month without tethering!

I was wondering, if you currently have that unlimited data plan, can you just use tethering whenever?

It's when you hook up your iPhone to another device such as a desktop or laptop computer in order to use the internet off of the phone. So, if your internet goes out at home or something, you can hook up your phone to your computer and use the data off of AT&T's network to go on the internet from your computer.

Damn it I wish I could hand out multiple rep!

So I am guessing there are tutorials for doing this online and probably on Clutchfans too?

Stay tuned because I had another question but was interrupted at work and forgot it. Thanks again!

Ha, well certainly. I'm not sure myself how the tethering will work exactly since it hasn't officially ever been released until it will be with these new data plans. But, yes, ask away any questions you have about how to get it to work on your computer.

Tethering is not available yet, and also not workable on the current build of iPhone, and most certainly not going to be able to work on iOS4.

However, when it goes live it will cost $15 or so bucks a month to activate.

And, as I demonstrated, while using tethering (lets say for 50% of your internet usage), your data bill will be SKY HIGH if you're not on the unlimited data plan.

Yeah, tethering sounds like something I could definitely use at my girl's parents house who have no ISP. :(

I'm aware that it isn't currently there yet, but when it does go into effect, and I pay that $15 fee to activate, I'm pretty much able to use tethering (I'm on the unlimited plan) whenever I want without having to worry about anything BS from AT&T right?

    Oh absolutely.

AT&T is being smart and trying to knock as many people as they can off unlimited data before iPhone 4s take over the planet and tethering goes live.

Yeah, I figured those SOBs would do anything to try and screw their customers. I really do think that they don't like Apple anymore and Apple doesn't like them either. I'm kind of surprised that the Verizon deal never went through, but if AT&T doesn't finish that HSPDA+ by the end of this year, I would fully expect AT&T to get on that Verizon wagon. They say LTE will be coming in 2012, but knowing AT&T.. it'll be another year before that happens. Tethering was announced a whole YEAR ago... and we didn't get anything.

so let me get this straight...

currently it's unlimited with no tethering for $30.

ATT says ok..we will cut it down to 2GB for $30 and make you pay $15 more to be able to tether.

45 bucks for 2GB? are you kidding me?

Well it's $25 for the 2GB and then yes a one-time $15 activation fee for tethering.

Well, now that I've looked up on it. I hope this isn't true.

    http://gizmodo.com/5553135/att-iphone-tethering-an-extra-20month

This says that not only will tethering only be available to people on the 2GB plan (NOT the unlimited data plan), but that it will cost an extra $20 a month to enable tethering (NOT just a one time fee).

That is hardcore expensive, I can't afford that crap.

Not the same thing, because in the 25+20 scenario, when you pass that 2GB threshold (and you WILL pass it), you're getting dinged 10 bucks for every gig past that.
