Chevy owners can point to a scoreboard for market share too. That doesn't mean a chevy is better than a Mercedes Benz.
J.D. Power and Associates in their 2004 Vehicle Dependability Study ranked Chevrolet (with 262 problems per 100 vehicles) quite a bit higher than Mercedes Benz (with 327 problems per 100 vehicles). Still, Mercedes are generally better looking than Chevrolet, so I imagine that, combined with some clever marketing and artificially high prices have all contributed to some serious brand loyalty in our consumer driven economy. To each his own, I guess.....
So the analogy is admittedly flawed since Dells had a failure rate out of the box at around 9% and seemed to be the lowest in the PC industry, except for Apple that had a 3% failure rate...
i would also add that besides the G500, mercedez benz has dropped off in design just as much as in dependability. the mac is excelling on both counts.
Hmmmm...........I notice you didn't reference where you got your info, so I did a little checking. It seems that consumerreports.org publishes a study on failure rates, and indeed, Apple does fair better than Dell. For inoperable failure rates, 9% of Dell PC's needed repair to initial componants, whereas only 7% of Apples needed repair to initial componants. Perhaps you just mis-typed; after all, the three and the seven are sort of close to each other on the keyboard. Perhaps they are even closer to each other on an Apple. Anyhoo.....seeing as the quality differences are almost neglible, I decided to look at something else--price. Considering base models, I went to the Apple website and found their cheapest eMac for $799. It has a 1.25 Ghz G4, 256 MB of DDR333 RAM, 40GB Ultra ATA drive, a combo DVD/CD-RW, and a 17" monitor. Dell's cheapest machine was half the price at $399, and it has a 2.4 Ghz processor, 256 MB of DDR333 RAM, 40GB Ultra ATA drive, a second bay CD-RW, and a 17" monitor. But hey.....the Apple looks better. It's as cute as a button!
Why is it a scoreboard? I like the Betamax vs VHS argument. Betamax was technically a better format, but VHS won the market share, and Betamax died. This meant that everyone was stuck with the lower quality. I hope that Apple doesn't die, so that people still have a choice.
Exactly. With that logic, every Creed album is better than every Nick Drake album, "The Notebook" is better than "Rushmore," and "The Nanny" is better than "Arrested Development." Basically, unless you are making a point about the Beatles being an exception-that-proves-the-rule in music by being the best and most popular band ever, "scoreboard" and "best" should be reserved for sports. Typically, it's those 3% - 5% market shares that are remembered as "ahead of their time." For a long time, Betamax was way better than VHS, actually, its not a terrible point of reference. Better picture, better controls, etc. But not staggeringly better, not worth dealing with the inconvenience of being a niche market. Problem was, Sony copyrighted the Beta format, tried to shoot the moon on the VCR maket, and got crushed. They could not innovate the machine any further. Apple, on the other hand, is staggeringly better, and the inconvenience is - other than gaming and other niche stuff - negligible at this point. And there is better integration -- Office is better on the Mac, iPods work ambidexterously, etc. I would not be surprised to see that marrket share change in the next few years. Apple Although after Faos' horror story, I am not buying any refurbished anything anytime soon. Actually, I bought a refurbished cell phone once, that thing sucked also. The lesson on that - in my admittedly apple-colored glasses - might be a warning against refurbs, rather than Macs. But still, Apple to needs to fix Faos' problem with a new CPU. If they knew what internet loudmouth he was, they'd surely send him a new G5 with a 30inch monitor, with a prototype 200GB iPod for his trouble. No one with any pull at Apple likes the Rockets enough to read this board and set him up? Shame.
I've only had one repair so far. The processors didn't match when it was delivered. Yes, it is a refurb but I did buy it from Apple. I'm going to take the computer back in to get the other problem fixed within the next week. To answer your questions: 1. Yes, I've taken them (computer and monitor) into the Apple Store and will do the same when I take my computer back again. 2. Just one repair to date. It'll be 2 soon. I don't think it's for the same problem. A lot of Apple users on the Apple discussion board thought my new problem might be fan or heat related. I don't think so since all fans are working and sometimes it will crash after being on just a couple minutes. Other times it takes 15-20. 3. The machine is a refurb purchased in June. It's still under warranty (thankfully).
Unfortunately based on what you are saying I don't think they will be willing to replace the computer or the monitor.
Saying a PC is better than a Mac is like saying Atkins is better than South Beach..........it isnt true. Have a nice day.
See, you're seeing this the wrong way. It's not that a PC is better than a Mac. It's that Mac OS X is far superior to Microsoft Windows 2000/XP. And Mac hardware is of much higher quality than your average Dell/Compaq PC box.
You do realize that Macs not only look good but are fully functional professional quality workstations, with an outstanding operating system don't you? Why are you trying to rub salt in Faos' wound?
You are absolutely correct. And I was a complete and total ass about it. I did it thinnking others were being asses, and I completely trumped them in the ******* department. Not the first time I've done it--though I've tried to change--it probably won't be the last. My apologies.
Yes. Like the hard drives that are the same ones you see in PCs. The same DIMMs that you see in PCs. The same video cards you see in PCs. The processors - oh yeah, IBM's technology. Which leaves the motherboards and the keyboard and mouse. No idea if Apple makes those themselves. Of course the the DIMMs, hard drives, and video cards that came standard in my G4 were all lower end than the ones I got in my PC at the time. The motherboard, processor, and bus are what bring the Mac up to par, but to generally state that the hardware is "better" is an oversight at best.
