People spend 3X as much for slow laptops just for form factor. It will be the case for this device also.
The Kindle is one the best purchases that I have ever made. There is zero reason for it to be color. I don't need or want to read books in color. The Kindle 2 is smaller, lighter, and faster than the Kindle 1. For what it costs and what it does, WITH NO CARRIER CHARGES, it is a fantastic device. I do not and will not read a book, for an extended amount of time, on a backlit screen. It will kill your eyes.
That's not true. The Macbook Air has been largely a failure in terms of units. There's a large variety of netbooks and CULV notebooks that are priced under $600 for the form factor.
so its about 130 more per size model for the 3G feature uhm no and 16gb only? no thanks the highest priced model is 830 you can get a kick ass laptop at that price
A Kindle costs half as much and is a better choice if your goal is e-reading. The iPad is a better choice if your goal is anything but e-reading. They just serve different markets.
Because it was marketed as a notebook and it had so crazy design flaws such as heating your legs. This will not be marketed as such and will sell like hot cakes. I can imagine it will do very well in verticals such as the medical field and logistics. People have been wanting this form factor forever.
The average user though isn't as informed as most here following this announcement. They will see this and the Kindle side by side and say, well if the iPad can do books and all this other stuff I might as well get it instead of something that just does one thing. The average consumer doesn't do research on most purchases. They see the features as black and white, either it can do it or it can't. Pending the price of the iPad I think most normal buyers will look past the screen issue. Most will automatically think it's better because it's color. Some of yall are giving consumers to much credit on product knowledge.
apparently some people here don't understand why people prefer the kindle and why they have e-ink. reading a book is different than reading a lcd screen. a book doesn't have a refresh rate.
Keyboard dock...this is looking like a solid, seamless on-the-go hybrid device (much nicer (and more expensive) than netbooks). "Why don't I just buy a netbook?" Netbooks are overhyped and silly. I would never buy one when I would just buy a laptop. This iPad device is a luxury netbook, but not bulky and "cool." Resent Apple or not, it's a neat device that will catch on.
I see what they did. It's $499 without 3G. So you can only connect in WiFi hot spots when on the road.
