This would definitely get me interested as I've had a few people finally talk me into going digital with books. I was also convinced by the reviews others posted on here. The only thing I worry is how proprietary it will be and will I be able to take my purchases to another device (probably doubtful). But even if it's a giant iPod Touch + book reader, I'm not sure it's worth the rumored $1000.
25% increase is not marginal. The i5 itself outperforms older Penryn chips with higher clock speeds. The latest integrated graphics is comparable to an Nvidia 9300M and benefits from Turbo Boost. For those who don't game and want 1080p streams, that's more than enough.
The i5 itself is a 20-40% boost in performance in various applications over the previous Core architecture. The Turbo Boost is just using the processor more efficiently on top of that. The i5's integrated graphics is superior to the previous-generation "standard" 4500-series IGP. If you need more graphics horsepower than that (most average user don't), the i5's chipset allows for switchable graphics that allow you to go from IGP to discrete graphics mode where you can get a 5000-series mobile graphics card as well. About the only disappointment is the battery life improvements for which I've been reading has been nearly none. But then that can be interpreted as being a large performance boost over Core with no battery loss.
I am more excited about the next gen iphone than the tablet. Although, the tablet could be a replacement for someone's briefcase. With a tablet, signatures on documents shouldn't be a problem I just hope they introduce new iphone hardware, which is heavily rumored to be releasing this summer. Here's a visualization of the iphone 4 hardware rumors (from huffingtonpost.com):
I'm mostly looking forward to what iPhone OS 4.0 will have, but definitely interested in seeing what they have planned with this tablet.
I still remember the first time when I saw the very first tablet PC many years ago, I told myself my next computer gadget had to be a tablet. I eventually bought another 2 notebooks during these years yet failed to find a tablet that suits my requirements. I really looking forward to this Apple Tablet. I will be very disappointed if it turned out to be an enlarged IPhone with 10-inch display.
That's exactly what you're getting. No company out there is going to create a ultimate machine even though they could but it will kill the market if they do.
maybe my views on the tablet will change tomorrow..but i just dont know what they want me to do with a 10" device. i have the iphone and at home i have the desktop and a laptop. i dont know if i want to carry another device with me thats probably not as flexible in terms of functionality as a small laptop. even if it is useful..i am not convinced why one would spend close to a grand on it.
I've used a Kindle and now I'm using the free Kindle App on my iphone and I like it much better. Nice being able to carry a couple books on my phone for quick reading.
Wow, you and I have exact same thoughts on this one. I've always been interested in tablet like device since I saw first one many years back. I hope that Apple comes out with something great with tablet to make me want to buy it. Ideally, in addition to multi-touch interface, I hope that they also have writing capabilities using something like a stylus pen.
I know a lot of people who are on Verizon that would get the iPhone if it came out on the carrier. If AT&T loses its exclusivity and Verizon gets the iPhone, it will be game over IMO for Android and BlackBerry.
My biggest complaint is trying to read a lot of material on an iPhone screen. For me, it's just too small for my needs. I've heard 7" as a possible first sized tablet, followed by the 10" in a few months. A 7 inch screen would make a huge difference. That's double the size of the current iPhone and big enough to be a serious web browser, easier to type, much easier to read. A laptop substitute for when you don't want to lug a laptop around in a briefcase. If it's much more powerful and has far better graphics than an iPhone, not hard to do, and has Flash, then I'd be a happy camper.

I wish Jobs would get this damn announcement over with. It's been littering my Bloomberg news feed for the last two weeks. It's going on down the street from my office, and I'm tempted to go over there to laugh at all the hipster douchebags who are going to dish out $1k for an iPad. The hype here isn't justified. We know it's roughly 10", costs around $700-$1000, with possible carrier subsidy. Probably runs on an ARM Cortex A9-based SoC designed by PA Semi, who they acquired last year. Some rumors say that Intel Atom has the design win, while others say NVIDIA Tegra does. I disagree. Anyway, even though you can dock this thing at your desk, I just don't think people have room for another connected device. You already have your laptop, smartphone, and netbook. If I want an e-reader, I can buy the Kindle for $249 and save some cash.
I don't understand the allure of a tablet. i5s sound nice though. My old school G4 powerbook is getting sllooooooowwwww.
