I think OS 4 will allow multitasking but not on a grand level like real laptops and computers. This of course will continue to be a divide with the people that lamented the iPhone/ipad for not having the ability to multitask ("see y'all still don't have true multitasking! Android FTMFW!") and the people that wants to believe that it's real multitasking ("yay! Now we get to have TWO apps run at once! Life is grand!!!")
I think Apple has made it clear that they don't intend to offer users the ability to truly multitask as in "run as many applications simultaneously as your device allows you to" the way Palm does. It is true that multitasking does create new performance/resource management issues. What Palm has done recently with the latest WebOS update is to limit the amount of time apps can hold resources idle in the background so that they cannot stay there and invisibly consume memory/CPU power without the user knowing it or being able to do something abut it. But the beauty of Palm's multitasking is the card concept, and that is always going to be something exclusive to WebOS. If Apple was serious about multitasking they'd come up with a new UI concept that builds on what they already do with Safari and just apply it to all apps...but everyone must bow to Steve Jobs' infinite wisdom so it may never happen.
why are you so butthurt about the iPad? don't buy one if you think it's too pricey. or better yet, use the time you are spending in this thread b****ing away to earn some scratch so that apple's price point won't be such an issue.
Oh please, get that crap outta here. It's fun for me. I'm an engineer and a gadget enthusiast, so naturally I get engaged in threads about such topics. By your own logic, if my arguments upset you (and they seem to do), then don't bother reading them.
No dude, he makes a good point. You obviously have an axe to grind with Apple and Jobs, and what is the point in trying to answer your questions, or sell you on something for which obviously isn't a good fit for you? I guess if you're looking for attention for being unsold on the iPad, you've found it. Otherwise, I don't really know what you're trying to accomplish with your posts. edit: Maybe you're trying to convince some people not to get it? But then again, that seems like a monumental waste of your time.
You're reading way too much into it. It's as simple as I said. This thread is about the iPad. I made a point that I don't think it's worth $500. Some of you disagreed, and I defended my position. So what's it now, "Go away, party pooper?" Yes, I do have issues with some of Apple's policies -- as someone who thrives on being able to customize my personal computing devices, I generally bristle whenever a company tries to sell me a product and tries to tell me that I don't need option X when in fact I do WANT option X. I have a healthy appreciation for Apple's products -- I know why their previous products have been as successful as they were. I love toys. I don't own too many of them, but I love researching them. My point in this thread is: I don't get the iPad, and nobody has been able to really explain to me why it is a device that is worth spending $500 on. It is possible that in the future the value proposition changes due to the app store, for example, getting new iPad apps that make it a must-have device. As of now, it's just not worth it, and that's my point.
These video segments are pretty informational. Explains a lot of the reasoning behind the iPad's utilities or lack thereof. This one is about multitasking. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Aks4Nowyobs&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Aks4Nowyobs&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
The Marvel Comics Ipad application is amazing. Ive never been into comics, but messing around with the application has made me want to casually read them on the ipad. The presentation and color are top notch. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yNx_XlK65k8&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yNx_XlK65k8&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
I don't know where you're getting these videos from, but some of the info presented in them is complete crap (Only looked at the multi-tasking video you embedded, at least the first half of it).
Hey Donny... Seriously, don't trust this guy. He really doesn't know what the hell he's saying. A lot of what he says can't even be backed up because he makes stuff up. The one you posted earlier about Flash had a load of bull **** in it, trying to fool people who are gadget illiterates with false info. He seems like an Apple fanboy who has a reasoning for everything.
To average Joes multi-task = multiple running of applications. To people know it as the term of art, they are not going to mistaken that ipad runs on single task OS. So the point he is making is superfluous. Concurrent running of apps are not useless feature as he claims. Actually it is very useful. I like to listen to music while read the ebook, can ipad do that?
Yes, but only if the music is playing through iTunes. Not an issue for me, but surely sucks if you get your tunes using something like Pandora. Edit: Also the mail app will fetch email in the background for you at intervals you set in the settings app. The iPhone OS does multitasking. Apple just limits that capability to their own apps. They apparently do the same thing with private APIs restricted for use by AAPL developers only. From what I understand, the what to do about the Thursday announcement is that Apple may "allow" other apps to do what theirs do.
