The show is nothing but a racially diverse set of girl bosses and a few beta males. They did to Baldwin what they did to Indiana Jones.
Commodore isn't wrong that there are a larger number of female leads this season. For men, you have Ed and Miles. For women, there's Danielle, Aleida, Margo/Irina, and Kelly. Outside of Ed, the last good male lead was Gordo but previous seasons had good strong women characters like Ellen and Molly. The show does favor women in power, not that there's anything wrong with that.
Women leaders in the show aren’t just for political correctness but in the alternate timeline women become far more empowered than in this one. Because Russia sent a female cosmonaut to the moon meant they the US had to also. Having female astronauts greatly changed the impression of women as leaders. That led to the passage of the equal rights amendment, which failed in our timeline, and to the election of a female president in the 1990’s.
The technology on the show is extrapolated from existing technology and even programs like Sea dragon that were real NASA programs but were abandoned because of lack of funding.
I want a show when the decedents of Mansa Musa discover the Americas and bring in slaves from Europe. Now that's something alternative history I'd love to see...eh I won't derail further.
That's an interesting concept actually. If Mansa Musa had discovered America would he have colonized it? Would his descendants have managed to dominate like the Europeans did? Food for thought.
I liked that episode. We need more Dev, less Miles. Any theories on how the Miles subplot matters? It's been pretty irrelevant in the main plot.
So, almost done with season 1. Like the show, just wish the episodes were like 1/3 shorter. Goodness gracious, they reeeeallly like to stretch out stuff. Also, what's with all the needless drama? Whoever said this show was more drama than sci-fi, well, I should have listened.
That’s one of Jared Diamonds arguments. There’s also advancements in transportation and weapons technology that the Europeans made that Sub Saharan Africans and others didn’t. With the Chinese politics and culture played a role. in the Ming Dynasty Admiral Chang He led massive fleets into Southeast Asia and all the way to Africa. The following emperor though decided against exploration and stopped further expeditions and even burned some of the ships.
I haven’t seen the latest episodes but my understanding is that it’s a have versus have nots struggle. It’s also the idea that the first few seasons where about astronauts risking their lives for country and glory but now there are people just trying to make a living in space.
After the Packers 49er game last night finished out Season 4. This season was very uneven and thought while it had some interesting ideas wasn't sure where it was going in the middle of it. It finished very strong and the last episode was very good. I like how the story wrapped up an some strong acting performances from the actors. I don't know how much the writers have been influenced by The Expanse but the events of this season particularly the ending seems to foreshadow the universe (solar system) of The Expanse with the beginnings of a divide between Earth and Mars and even a Belter underclass. I know the writers of The Expanse have said informally that The Expanse is the same universe as The Martian and even named a Martian ship The Mark Watney after the protagonist of the Martian. It would be pretty cool if they tied in For All Mankind to The Expanse.
I just watched this show. I like the references to specific locations in Houston. I guess they were forced to because of the subject and setting, but I hardly ever see that in films or television. Houston is the fourth biggest city in the country. Should be used more often... I feel like Urban Cowboy tarnished the image a bit. Made Houston is seem like one giant, muddy trailer park.
