I know I'm a shameless Mac advocate, but I've really found more OS X only software that's cool than I ever had for Windows. Stuff like Tinderbox, OmniGraffle, SonyEricsson Clicker, NetNewsWire, Launchbar, not to mention iTunes, iPhoto et al.
DOD: How much you want for the G4? I think the software issue is very overrated for the vast majority of computer users. On here, there are a lot of, um, well, uh, geeks - lets' be honest - so we have very specific needs and likes when it comes to computers. Most people who use computers for personal use don't need them for anything other than email, the internet and some basic word processing. If that weren't the case AOL wouldn't be the largest internet provider on the planet. For 90% of people, a Mac will provide them all that they ever need in the way of basic software packages. Now, if you need Win for programming or games or whatever, that's fine. But, most people just don't which is why Mac is as viable a computer option for most people as any PC. I agree that the prices are higher but they would most certainly drop if more people bought them and I'm more than willing to pay the extra to avoid dealing with Windows, an operating system I've used and hated for many years.
If you're seriously interested, let me know. My cousin wanted to buy it off me, but he's waffling, and I'm looking into a Powerbook notebook or (ugh!) one of these G5's when they're released. Email me... make an offer... I haven't researched the prices, and it doesn't have a cool Apple monitor. Do a search on EBay and I'll sell for less than whatever it's selling for on there. I'll even throw in the latest OS X CD's (Jaguar). BTW, it's a G4 733 MHz.
DOD: Thanks but I'm not ready to buy one yet. It'll be Christmastime before I do anything. Obviously a good computer, though.
I just love watching a bunch of Apple guys stand in a circle surrounding a new Mac product and whack off talking about how revolutionary it is...how it looks so much better than anything before it...how it's faster...how the pc guys are too stupid to see the light... Does that make me gay? FYI I am one of those dual platform geeks so back off Apple dorks...I speak your language and support your platform...I am just not myopic and disillusioned. Not that you are...
I just love watching a bunch of uptight PC users stand in a circle with their arms folded and criticize Mac users when they feel threatened saying how disillusioned we are but being very careful to defend themselves by saying, "Hey, man, I'm hip. I am all cross platform and **** too." so they don't seem like cheese-eating, cubicle-dwellers. Does that make me hetero-phobic? FYI, I'm not a PC basher. My business relies on the performance of both platforms. I'm just not narrow-minded and overly rigid. Not that you are...
That would be me also. I HAD to use a Mac from Elementary school through High School. Once I got out, I turned PC. I'll never go back. Macs are ok, but I'm so comfortable with PC systems my last three have been custom built.
i never bothered to check, but can you play all the same games on mac that you can play on pc? like half-life and age of mythology and civilization and stuff like that.
nope...that was the whole point of that drunkgamers apple switch parody. The point is that apple only has a few games, while practically every game ever made can be played on the PC.
It is very true that the Mac has a shortage of games. However, that's what I bought my PS2 for, which is plugged into my widescreen TV. I've never really used a computer for games. Well, maybe the odd strategy type game (Age of Empires, Civ, The Sims), but there are a fair number of those games available on the Mac anyway. If you're buying a computer to do some work on, and play some games, get a PC. My computer is basically for work, so I got a Mac. Straightforward really.
BTW, I have a self-built Athlon at home. It gets used for checking web design stuff (more convenient than using Virtual PC). I used to have it dual-booting Linux and XP, but then I realised I never used Linux, so I got rid. I have an old Apple iMac (my last Mac) running OpenBSD as a file server/DNS box. I'd like to think I'm fairly platform agnostic. On the whole though, I prefer the Mac experience.
HI MY NAME IS JEFF I MUST COME TO THE AID OF ALL APPLE USERS WHEN THEY ARE SUBVERTLY ATTACKED. I MUST DO THIS IN A DEVISIVE SEEMINGLY NON-THREATENING MANNER AND TRY TO SEEM HUMOROUS EVEN IF I WAS REALLY BOTHERED BY THE POST. Jeez...insert knife into wound and t..w..i..s..t..!! LOL! too funny
I'm always pleased when Apple comes out with a new machine. It raises the bar for the PC. Except for the price, the lack of software, and the manditory membership in the Apple glee club, I might consider one myself.
I wasn't trying to be funny. Bailey: I agree with your comment about Mac's when it comes to games and the web. Mac sucks when it comes to games and is nearly worthless for advanced programming for the web or anything else for that matter. Fortunately, I don't need it for either.
