I admit I'm not familiar with that film. It is a boat movie so perhaps we could have a another thread on "boat" movies.
Platoon vs Apocalypse Now vs Full Metal Jacket? eta: I am disappointed that nobody has mentioned Joseph Conrad yet
"I am beyond their timid, lying morality, and so I am beyond caring." -- Kurtz Yeah...AP is pretty fantastic, yet again.
I was just kidding. But like Apocalypse Now, it nearly killed its film crew. Werner was at his most demented, apparently. And @Buck Turgidson, I did reference the source material but yeah, did not name Conrad by name. I've always thought the movie was very faithful in spirit and philosophy to the book, and that's why it's awesome.
Platoon is a great movie and if I remember correctly it won best picture over Full Metal Jacket. Platoon though hasn't held up historically with the same following as those two other movies. The Deer Hunter also beat out Apocalypse Now for best picture but isn't regarded now as highly as Apocalypse Now. Also We Were Soldiers follows very close to Joe Galloway's actual experience of the battle of Ia Drang Valley. Critically and historically it's not had the same following as any of the movies above. Even though it might be most factually accurate recounting of a battle in Vietnam.
