[AP] Video shows bystanders ignoring hit-and-run victim

    You don't have to stand in the MIDDLE of the road to stop traffic from running over the guy. You can stand slightly to the side and raise your hand. You'll definitely be a lot more visible than some 70-year old man lying paralyzed in the road.

    I lived in Connecticut for a short time and found it to be one of the most unfriendly places in the world. It seems less surprising to see more people ignoring it knowing it's in Hartford.

    A few years ago, I witnessed a pretty bad single-car accident on the highway between Fort Worth and Wichita Falls. By the time I got to the actual scene and pulled over, there were at least ten other people who had stopped to help. There wasn't a whole lot anybody could do other than call the police and try to calm the driver (who had been ejected from the car) and her passenger (who was stuck in now-overturned car), but everybody wanted to do something.

    That (and other examples that I've experienced or witnessed personally) make me believe that the bystander effect is possibly more pronounced in certain areas than in others.
