This is a quote by one of the Piston's players, not mgt.: "He (Rick Carlisle) got criticized for not being a personable guy... but on the court, he did a good job with us," Pistons guard Chauncey Billups told ESPN Radio's Weekend All Night show on Saturday. "We were happy with him. But off the court, he just didn't treat people the right way, and it caught up with him." http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/newreply.php?s=&action=newreply&postid=896611 Carlisle would appear to have some issues with social skills or demeanor, which may or may not be a problem, but the issue has been brought up by one of his own players and team mgt. However, it would be in the Rockets best interest (CD and Les) IMO to at least grant him an interview simply because every interview with a skilled basketball mind gives our mgt. a fresh new perspective from an outsiders point of view in terms of how to construct a better system, utilize players etc. from potential coaches who are normally not at liberty to make such observations or statements while under contract. All this insider info from available NBA coaching prospects is a valuable resource I would think, but having said all that, I DO think Rockets' mgt needs to make sure they don't allow the coaching pool to become shallow as coaches are getting hired with each passing day
yeah, iper, I was wondering the same thing... maybe they are waiting for guys like Don Nelson or Riley ... who knows, even Phil Jackson made hints of quittiing ... and, Carlisle would be someone interesting, I would think. Earlier, it was reported that CD said they got at least 30 calls last week ... we've only heard of 5 or 6 of those guys. Les and CD are shrewd. They may do the whole Texas slow dance on the outside, but they wheel and deal behind the scenes. And, Les is from NY. He'll strike quickly to make a deal happen, if that's necessary. He knows that a few million is nothing in this equation. They are looking at just the right fit for our team. If we didn't get Brown, I don't think it had anything to do with money. If Brown signs with Detroit, (25mil/5 years) it'll be for less than he already was getting from Philly (14mil/2yrs), or could have gotten from Washington (8mil/yr). It might have been about issues of player control, power, etc. Brown may have had other issues behind the scenes that were more important to him that Houston couldn't match, such as following in his father's footsteps 25 years ago. I just think, that if the deal was possible, CD and Les would have done it. And, I only think they would have played it cool, if they had something they wanted more in their back pocket. If they are saying they are going slow, it either means they have already made up their minds, negotiating behind the scenes, or waiting for something else they know is coming, like another coach retiring. It should be interesting...
Sherlock - nice post. Gald somebody is willing to give credit to well respectd professionas as doing their jobs correctly, and not jumping to the conclusion that just because "I" don't know what is going on, "they" must be stupid.
Other teams are signing the coaches they want while we are taking our time...things are looking good indeed...
