What's with all the Steinbrenner love. He won two championships in his first 17 years as owner. He was petty disliked because he was a meddling owner who did not win. Then in 1990 he stepped down from day to day operations to avoid being suspended. The team then went on a winning streak after his sons took over.

    In Steinbrenner's 37 years of ownership - 7 championships.
    The previous 37 years - 16 championships.

    RIP

i was telling a guy at work, it's really hard to believe that Mr. Steinbrenner bought the team for around $10 million.

How many championships has anyone else had in that same span? IN ANY sport?

The Rockets have been in Houston for 39 years. Look at how much people still slobber over those 2 titles they won.

The Dallas Cowboys have won 5 Super Bowls around the same 40 year period. Look at the sense of entitlement in Cowboy Country.

The Lakers have won 9, the Bulls 6, Celtics 6, Steelers 6, Canadiens 6. And the other sports have to deal with salary caps.

Pretty darn good for him to be in those ranks, I say. He's just behind Jerry Buss in titles for an owner in that same period. Its still Yankees then everyone else in the MLB.

Technically the MLB has a luxury tax, though the Yankees exceed it. 14 playoff appearances in 15 years, pretty tough to beat.
