Everybody and their mother in China is laughing at that article by that stupid azz officer. They know that it's just one stupid article. However, when this is reported by the AP, it sounds like it is China instead of one stupid writer that is having something against Yao. And then this board starts all the knee-jerk attacking on the evil communist government that is oppressing its people and ruling them with terror...

It's almost like one article on some newspaper bashing Tmac for not participate in Team USA, that somehow turned into blaming the evil Bush government trying to suck every drop of blood from their poor workers. If you see something like this, what would be your reaction?

Again, It is not China against Yao. And it is not China that needs a chill pill.

when will this thread go to D&D?

Actually, I am from Taiwan, and I identify myself as a Chinese... afterall, the offical government name for Taiwan is the "Republic of China", so it IS a Chinese government ;)

Anyway, I really hope this article was the opinion of some official who still lived in the time of cultural revolution (just like other fourmer had pointed out). Most if not all Chinese has witness Yao's devotion, loyalty, and contribution to the Chinese international competition. To criticize Yao on his devotion toward CNT is unheard of, and people will know.

If there is anything that Chinese culture valued most, it will be family... government always comes in second.

Basically that Chinese sports official is saying for Yao to help CNT achieve their goal (which coincides with one of Yao's own), i.e., win the first ever medal in Mens basketball in Olympics, Yao needs to set his priority straight, lead the team by example, and make some personal sacrifice if necessary. Those may sound like commie propaganda, but they have been part of what propels China to the status of a sports powerhouse today, whether anyone likes it or not. The successes of Chinese sports are built on decades of collective effort by generations of Chinese athletes that have excelled in international competitions of all sorts. Yao just happens to be one of them.

Maybe those young and spoiled brats on Chinese BBS still relish the good 'ol days when Chinamen were called Sick Men from East Asia? I don't know.

County is important but country can never come before the individual. We just have a different world view. You seem to think that the state is more important than people.

    Hey, don't change my citizenship.....pleeeeeeeease.

I was born in Guangzhou, China in the 50s. I was brought up in Hong Kong, and I have been working in China for the past 20 some years......So I am not in any sense a Taiwanese, even though I studied university in Taiwan.

Dude - this isn't the USSR. He does not need to "defect". He can go and leave China as he pleases.

Come on, guys. That is just a media with less reader in china.
As to other media of china, they always like to make things more controversial.
There are many departments in china that they want to show their authority. But CBA is the best kind department I can find in china sport area.I does not mean the CBA four years ago. The president LI YUANWEI of current CBA is really nice to YAO. Don't blame CBA again. Just see the time Yao had played with CNT, it is shorter with every year.
Now Yao just return CNT to excise with him team, but does not play until Sepetemper. In today's media day of CBA, CBA officer just praises Yao for his professional spirit.

yuantian, as a Chinese I must give my thanks to you for all the clarification about China here in the thread. I would have supported you if I saw the thread earlier, but I guess I can't say any better than you did.

Well, all you need to do is post a Chinese government related article to gather all of them into one thread.

    I wonder why

What do you mean 'they? Don't you mean 'we'?

This thread either needs to be switched to the Debate forum or just deleted altogether, it's like quoting from the editorial's page on an NBA player, it's not breaking news.......
