You're joking right? There is still a controlling central party is there not? They have state run media and internet access to their citizens. And they have it in their heads to take over Taiwan simply because it's a refugee province.

Ok, not to trail off from sports, Yao is a perfect embodiment of their best qualities: work ethic, duty, family guy, and superb competitor. The last thing they should do is trample on him in the world's eye for the sake of claiming ownership over his feelings and desires for 'national glory'. Makes me want to vomit! :(

it's all a process. i am sure back in the days of "great depression", america was one of the worst place to live. china is going through the same process. when we make it, everything will be all the better.

edit: someone should move this to D&D, it's getting out of hand here.

it's been said, many many times. it's NOT official view. someone just mouthed off their opinion. i thought everyone was hoping china would have more freedom of speech. now someone said something, you guys are bashing the whole system? get a grip.

Take it easy. Most of this stems from my (and I suspect others) deep respect and empathy for the enormous pressure Yao gets. He's an admiration for every sports fan because of the constant speculation and criticism. I really wish he could determine his own destiny, and it just sucks that he can't because of the CBA.

That and along with the 70 million communist party members plus the self proclaimed Communist government with a Politiboro. What's your definition of Communist country? You are just make a biased judgement typical of an uninformed person

You should learn what is a communist country. China is totalitarian capitalistic country. A communist country is where everything belongs to the group(country) which couldn't be farther from the truth in China these days.

China is much more of a capitalistic country than US in many ways.

70 million communist party members means nothing. if you want to get promotions in politics, you have to be a member. joining the party is the main way to get higher up and believing the philosophy is optional. you may to have like you do though. but really, communism ideology is an utopian ideology. acting like a communist means, you are acting like a real good person. always sharing, helping others, and work hard. communism does NOT equal totalitariansim. in fact, in a true communist society, it would enjoy MORE freendom and equality than capitalist society. that being said, given greedy human nature, a true communist society will never occur in a large scale. what you see in china right now is capitalism under communist party rule with some bad moles giving it bad reputation.

You are trying so hard to prove my point? You are saying that you know hundreds of people to prove that I say you know less than 1000 Chinese. You said you have hundreds of relatives, I really doubt it, but even if it's true. Do you know their full names and ages? You can't honestly say that you know, and you met all of them in person, then how could you claim you know their views of the government? Speaking of your schoolmates, you get 60 totally different classmates every single semester? That's new to me. Even if you did, did you conduct a survey with every single one of them to know their political views?

I didn't say I know what the majority think of the government. In fact, I said I don't know, I just don't think you could claim you know for sure, when there is no reliable poll data you could present, nor could you put down 1000 names of Chinese people you "know". I attend a demonstration with other 100 thousand people, but I can't claim I KNOW all of them, can I?

It's like your own opinion not convincing enough, you have to drag this empty "majority" into the discussion to make your case.

You're right. My initial reaction was really shock and anger at their resentment towards Yao for charity work and starting family before the national interest. Perhaps things are different in China than the light they cast on the rest of the world regarding their citizens. However, that does tend to imply communism when a government decides that an individual's first obligation is to their national interest.
But let's leave that debate to the politicians and historians.

I think where we differ is what we define as communism. What you are seeing now is more of a gradual transition of communism to capitalism. I just don't think you can have a communistic government w/o a communistic country. I guess those items just don't add up. I think you overestimate the control China has over the media. There are only a few particularly sensitive items that are screened, but for the most part, content is provided by private entities and they absolutely do have access to foreign content. As a governing body, they function more like an oligarchy or a dictatorship at times than they do as communistic government.

My opinion on the whole situation is that communism may be used as an excuse, but it is certainly not what they are.

let's see, i have 11 cousins, that makes their 24 parents. plus my family and grandparents. plus my parents' cousins, my grandparents' siblings, their offsprings. and yes i have met ALL of them. when you live that close you get to meet all of them. even distant relatives. the concept of "clan" is big in china. most people refer to their big family. every traditional holiday, it would involve close to a hundred people gatherting together. so ya, i'm close with all of them. but being said, i admit, i do NOT know their political view. but if there are any discontent, i would have heard it from their conversations. i did hear complaints about some policies. but no one voiced hatred to the the government. further, most of the older generation, are more loyal to the government than younger ones. people change their mind in their life time. and there are tons of people want a change. but if the majority hate the government, something catastrophic would have happened. minor clashes are usually caused by local government being assholes.

ya, see, it's not communism. it's close to 3000 years of imperial rule and prior to that 2000/3000 years of fedual rule caused government decision on individual's obligation. loyalty is soooo important, there is a saying that, if the government wants your head, you bring it to them. of course, not everyone is loyal. but anyways, people mistakenly label everything to communism when it's really the culture. actually, commuist party tried very hard to get rid of some parts of the culture. obviously, they will not mess with the loyalty part. but thanks for being understanding though :)

back to the topic on yi. i still hope he plays in nba and even in milwaukee. i'm from wisconsin and a bucks fan :) but it he doesn't want to, just trade him for someone else. i have no problem with that. besides, i read somewhere that the artcile is completely made up. the people who supposedly said those things denied it. they said it's all BS. so i donno what's going on not. it could very well be, some journalist completely made this crap up to get people to read their paper.

Even you know like 10,000 people, that still does not mean that you can say something on the behalf of the majority of the Chinese people. I'm not saying your arguement of people like the government is true or not, it's just that you cannot say you know how the majority of the Chinese are thinking, no matter how many people you know in real life.

i don't think i'm claiming that. but voting does not reflect the view of the people here either. so really, there is no way to find out what people are thinking.
