I don't see how this is much different from the flak American Olympians got for their half-hearted efforts at practice. Or, the flak players like Iverson would get for skipping a practice. How about all the complaining about Yao choosing to miss training camps and preseason to play games for CNT? I'm not sure an editorial reproach is much out of line with how we treat players in the States.

They don't want Yao there so Yao can get better. They want him so that the rest of the team can get better. Yao isn't going to win any Olympic games by himself.

    OMG

Let that director of basketball take all of the trips that are required in a normal season without the playing and he will still feel mentally and emotionally drained.

And hes spending too much time with Special Olympics? Yea Yao should apologize for caring. didn't he have an injury?

    That is ridiculous!!!

Not even the Rockets criticize him and they'll paying him 80 mil

Exactly right. Unfortunately the American media has misreported it because they don't know that it's an editorial and has made it sound official.

I agree that the team needs to practice playing with Yao. If Yao were a superstar SG, it wouldn't be as bad because he'd just dominate the ball, but he needs to have the ball passed to him and so the team needs to coordinate and practice feeding the post (which we all know is much harder than it seems).

    Two questions

What are the details of the apology Wang had to do?

Does Yao have much family? Brothers and sisters? Why not get his wife and his parents over during the season for a "photo shoot" and then defect?

This should be in the D&D. I thought China was becoming more capitalistic. They're still commanding too much of Yao. Hillary will be the closest thing we get to the Chinese government. That's unfortunate.

What else can he do for that national team that he hasn't already? The first, what, 3 NBA seasons he used his summer to play/practice with the national team. I understand he's their pillar and is pretty much their only dominating international player, but to gripe that he's late because he had to rest a bit longer? I think that they didn't have anything else to complain about and just wanted to take a stab at Yao.

For those of you who have fallen into the knee-jerk China-bashing mode, think about this: what if Kobe decided for "personal reasons" to show up 2 weeks late to the USA Basketball training camp this year, and miss some exhibition games in the process? He would be heavily criticized in the papers and editorials for being a selfish jerk who doesn't care about representing his country. In fact, I'm sure on people on this board would say the same.

The fact that Yao can do it, and get away with it with minimal flak, shows that he has a track record of integrity and service to his country. He should keep that record intact. Meanwhile, it is very hypocritical to suggest that we are wrong to be unhappy that Yao has decided to show up late when the American media does the same when the American athletes don't show up.

Pryuen isnt even from China. He is Taiwanese. I somehow doubt that a Taiwanese person would be loyal to the Chinese government...

The tip of the iceberg has been discussed many times on this board.

Now,the Chinese government is showing it's true colors once again as the Titanic flounders.

Basic human freedoms are crushed in the relentless pusuit of....what?

They are deadset in killing the golden goose that represents limitless possibilities for those that dare to dream.

It's not the government, not the people, just a stupid, totally outdated, editor/columnist/"journalist", who still lives in Culture Revolution.
