I'd say only one of the locations is close enough to the Dome for one to immediately assume they were evacuees. Plus, are there still evacuees at the Dome/Reliant Center?
no, there's not. haven't been for weeks now. the ones who were there are in apartments and elsewhere scattered across the city.
I'd say all three are. Montrose and Lovett is about 4 or 5 miles away at the most. Bennigan's is right there at Kirby and 610 and Almeda and OST are within walking distance of the dome. And while there aren't any in the dome, there are definitely ALOT integrated in and around the immediate area. My work has has processed quite a few claims involving evacuees and driving through the complexes in the area and I've personally noticed more LA plates in that immediate area than any other area of town we work in.
For the record : I just noted the stories were all related by the accent and general location. First victims are early 30s black males in hip-hop gear - report assailants black males in jeans and t-shirts that "talk funny" approached looking for handout, then gun. Second victim is late 20s Serbian white male (has funny accent himself) who reports assailant black male who "talked funny" in jeans and t-shirt approached with vagrant opener and then put gun in ribs. Third victim is mid-sixies white female accompained by mid 70s care patients in parking lot, reports mixed car of young assailants (white, hispanic, black) that "talked funny". I suppose they yelled funny, more like it, with demand to release purse. They drove up, grabbed, with bad instinct she grabbed strap, they yelled, drove with her until she released. I think the "more people = more crime" post is probably on target. It's interesting to see the assumptions in replies here, though. I do think there's a good market here for assault-level criminals, if they were displaced. They may as well do their crimes here as anywhere else. I guess we all have to be a little more guarded for a while.
I dont know why anybody is surprised, of course the crime was going to go up, and I cant wait for them to go back to tearing up their own town. If they were thugs in New Orleans, they're now thugs in Houston.
Some disheartening responses here. Assuming here that evacuees were the problem here (though the statistics say our crime rate has not been negatively affected by their presence), is really that much better to have a native Houstonian stick a gun in your face than some out-of-towner? I understand the objection to being assaulted, but the Houstonians we've had here aren't all exactly angels either.
Luckyazn, dude, can you edit your post and delete that long ass web address so we don't have to keep scrolling left to right to read the posts???
You do realize that they're not going to go back, right? People - they're not going to go back. Say it with me. Why would they go back? What could possibly be their motivating factor to go back to their ghetto in NO when they are receiving so much here? Here ya go - while you're here, have some free rent.
it was just a matter of time before, the people who had to flee the crime capital of the US for like a decade running now, come and commit crimes in houston or anywhere else. i know the dallas/fort worth area has had problems because my wife's family is from around there and they've had some killings up there by evacuees, and yes they were from louisiana. i'm not trying to say that all crimes now committed in the state of texas are by louisiana evacuees, but you can't turn a blind eye on the problem....to me, there are some that are very grateful that we are helping them, but there are still a lot who don't give a damn and are going to commit crimes just like they did when they lived in n.o.
LuckyAzn, edit that long ass url so I don't have to scroll side to side. Now then, I do know of one isolated incident. In my son's intermediate school, there are three evacuees that made the basketball team. That by itself has upset a lot of people, because three boys on the team last year were cut because of it. But the bigger issue is one of the boys has been a trouble maker from day one. He quit the football team twice, and both times the coaches asked him back. He got caught pissing in a cup and throwing it all over the locker room. Now he's already got in an argument with the basketball coach. Yet he still has a place on the team...why? Is it because he is big and fast and strong? It's bullsh!t is what it is, and he robbed someone of a place on the squad. PS...he's 13 years old, and has a three month old kid. But hey, he can sure play ball...
