PW wasn't going to be here in '07, at least not under the contract he signed (3 year, $27M option for '07-09). Stros tried to send Lane through waivers to send him down, he was claimed. Stros chose to lose a player who had zero chance of returning the next year (*for performance and financial reasons*) instead of a player who they would control for 3 more seasons. Didn't necessarily like it, but that's why they did what they did. PW also asked the Astros to release him early, after he was DFE'd, instead of trying to trade him, so *he* could pick where he wanted to play. Stros obliged. Neither the Stros nor Preston had anything negative to say about the other.
If I'm not mistaken, Purp would give his left nut for Dontrelle right now too take this thing to d and d or lock it up...this is the most tired, uneducated argument ive ever heard of we just gave the LARGEST CONTRACT IN ASTROS HISTORY TO A MINORITY....(not as high as the one we offered to ANOTHER MINORITY last year) higher than Bags, Bidge, Roy, Nolan, ROGER, Andy ....ANYONE.....
WTF are you talking about? His was a respectful post in response to my question. I'm not in battle here I would just like to share my position...IF YOU DON'T MIND.
The Astros have hired former Red Sox hitting coach Ron Jackson as the new hitting coach at Round Rock. He was fired by Boston, along with new Astros pitching coach Dave Wallace, after the season. The Astros have also promoted Rodney Linares (not "Al" as I called him earlier) from coach to manager at their Greenville A-ball club.
I'm talking about how your point #2 was shot down with solid facts. Shot down, in fact, like a dog with no legs. And mine was clearly not. Because I'm sick of this bullcrap. And you know what, I won't be respectful to stupid bullcrap like this. I'll be respectful to you, but I'll call this "the Astros are racist" nonsense what it is: a steaming pile of crap. ...and your post was the least divisive and accusatory of any of them (although to me it seemed like you were saying "Astros Type Player is code for white guy", which I find, well, ridiculous). My vehement response to you was OTT considering the nature of your post. I'm just sick of all of it. Does it matter if I mind? No, it doesn't. Wanting to see "the fruits of Jackie's labor" is, like Buck pointed out, fine. But using the current roster to levy ignorant (yes, ignorant) accusations is quite another. If that's what you're doing--accusing the Astros of racism, than "share your position" all you want. And, I'll be right here to tell you that that "position" is full of crap. "Period."
Just as you have interpreted my post in a way that seems reasonable to you, why get so upset about my interpretation in this issue? Right or wrong.
That's it! We didn't trade Wily T. because of his meager batting average and need for an outfielder with power. We did it because he wasn't white! It all makes sense. Drayton doesn't want to win a championship, he wants to show the superiority of the white race! Anyone who believes this seriously needs their head examined.
I used the word, "seemed" to leave open the very real possibility that I was wrong about your post. Was I? "My interpretation of the issue" sounds so much nicer than what's really happening here--in the face of a ton of very real and measurable facts which state the obvious opposite, you and others are levying accusations of racism against a very good organization. Why get upset? Because that's bull****, that's why. I've seen real racism. Sorry, but "why doesn't my favorite team have guys that look like me" does not qualify. "Period."
Lugo just got paid (in B-ston). Lugo had been unceremoniously dumped (in H-ston) after allegations, not conviction. It was clear that an established (and well paid) Astro would have survived that incident. That's the 'stros. No knuckleheads. In the locker room, at least.
defense yeah that good but offensive they all sucked easy outs only helps the other teams defense. Everett : 150 514 52 123 28 6 6 59 181 34 71 9 6 .290 .352 .239 SUCKS Ausmus : 139 439 37 101 16 1 2 39 125 45 71 3 1 .308 .285 .230 SUCKS Lane: 112 288 44 58 10 0 15 45 113 49 75 1 2 .318 .392 .201 SUCKS Didn't even hit his on weight. Lidge closer with a 5.28 era SUCKS as for munson had a bad year should have played more than ausmus Money was not the problem they had plenty. So what you are calling lame *ss examples lets just let the numbers speak for them selves.
How about we let *all* the facts speak for themselves? Your lameassed position was that the Astros only get rid of "non-white" players who have bad years. Everett: shopped hard for Tejada (thanks NJ) Lane: cheaper than PW, couldn't land a P in trade like Willy Ensberg: cheaper than PW, couldn't land a P in trade like Willy (still being shopped) Lidge: cheap, being shopped *hard* in a trade (and he's white, what gives???) Ausmus: did *not* suck defensively, no trade value, Astros looking for other options (even though he's white???) Munson: released (thanks Bobrek) The statement "money was not the problem they had plenty of money" betrays some serious ignorance on your part concerning how this all works. In other words, your accusation is lame, your examples are lame, and your supporting arguments are lame. Lame. Assed. "Period."
Currently, since the end of the 2006 season, the Astros have essentially lost from their 40 man roster (i.e. the players have been moved or are free agents) Pettitte, Clemens, Huff, Springer, Taveras, Hirsh, House, Munson and Buchholz. To the 40 man roster, they have added Lee, Jennings, Asencio, Holdzkom, Conrad, Estrada and Rodriguez. So they have currently "lost" 8 white players and 1 minority, while adding 3 white players and 4 minorities.
as a minority i cant believe this thread would even come about because the astros being racist is just ludacris, and i am ashamed that the thought would even come up. why as a minorities do we continually have to look at ourselves as being racially profiled when it isnt happening at all. i mean how many minorities do we have to have on our team to satify as not being racist?
From having worked for MLB at MMP and having been in the Press Box every home game and the elevator to the field, media cafeteria etc for most of the home games. Enos Cabell definately has Purp and Draytons ear. For me at least Jose Cruz IS Mr. Astro (with Dierker a close second) I don't know that it really improves the plight of minorities everywhere to have a Glen Barker at the end of our bench, I'm just not convinced that the legacy of Jackie Robinson mandates we have a certain African American reperesentation on each team. I think that the fact Bob Watson became the first black GM under Drayton's watch is a lot more important than if we have an extra Glen Barker or Darren Oliver on the end of our bench or at the back of our bullpen.
My GOD!!! Is this thread still active. plus to convince some fool that his paranoia is totally unfounded. Talk about beatin' your dead horse. End this NOW.
