You sound a lot like me. I love trying new shops here at home and when I travel...There can be a certain uniqueness to each one that I appreciate ... if I was lucky enough to open one it wouldn't be immediately soon so I have more than enough time to Dream

Own coffee shop no. Build and design a lot of restaurants though so if you have construction cost or permit questions hit me up.

I owned a coffee shop for about 10 years (sold it this May) and have owned an escape room for a few years now, along with some other companies in the past. I'm in Austin, but happy to sit down and talk anytime if you come this way. I consult with small businesses and entrepreneurs just to help out whenever I can, so I'm happy to share any advice I can.

One thing I will say: any advice you get from someone who doesn't first talk to you about your specific situation, your background, how you handle stress, your life goals, different financial elements, etc is probably not the best advice to follow. Everything about owning a business is tailored to the individual, why they want to own it, their background, etc. For example, my primary income source is from investing, and I started the coffee shop a a side project to support a non-profit rather than to maximize profit. That's an entirely different situation than someone who's doing it as their primary way to make money, which is an entirely different situation from someone who just loves coffee and wants to do something they love while making enough to survive (or is independently wealthy) vs. etc.

Wow. I'm surprised how many folks have been in the coffee biz.

I started a marketing firm last January. Totally different type of company. My advice is no matter how much you think you know your business, there will always be things you didn't anticipate. I'm in the hole $70k and my business partner is currently on my couch. But we know we're going to make it, simply because we helped our last employer build his own business before he screwed us over.

That said, it's taken longer than we thought to get the ball rolling down the hill.

Places like San Francisco and Seattle are better to open these shops. People in Houston would rather drink Starbucks and $1 coffee from the gas station than pay for good coffee.
