EV1 broke me away from AOHell many years ago and for that, I am forever greatful. I got on right as your DSL went away. That's my only complaint. What's the story behind that anyway?

Dave2000, is there a way I can set my modem up to cut my connection when my phone rings so I don't miss calls when I'm online? The phone company tells me to call you guys and you guys tell me to call the phone company.

Medicaid data is pretty sensitive data. So I'm willing to bet that it's a direct connection to Medicaid. That way they don't have to deal with as much security issues.

EV1 Rules... they keep my pc free from viruses nicely!

I have now placed 2 church's as well as 2 personal accounts that I know of on with you guys... and probably more that just haven't told me... I refer EV1 to everyone - no pun intended.

And the dial-up numbers list is growing all the time here in Dallas!

just use my moniker @ the ISP to "e" me... easy as pie!

Lot's of good webspace for your pages too!

$10.83 per month, and no problems. Worth every $.01.:D

I used EV1 for my ISDN back in the bad days before I could get broadband in my neighborhood. They were great. Never dropped my line, never a busy signal, and really good tech support.

    1) What kind of deposit do you have to make for EV1?
    B) Is it available in Austin?

As for the DSL thing, we first started out with DSL back in summer 2000. We went through Dallas based IP Communications to get our end users with DSL. Our first few months was hell with that company and the big boss wanted an alternative. We went with California based Northpoint Communications around the beginning of Fall 2000, which back then was one of the best, ranked up there with Covad (who PDQ was going through). People that were still on IPC had the choice to stay with them or go to Northpoint. So, we had TWO DSL providers with about 2/3rds of them with Northpoint and the other third with IPC. March 2001 came and Northpoint filed for bankruptcy. What sucked was that AT&T bought them out, and within days, they SHUT DOWN all of our Northpoint customers and gave all of the ISPs (even MSN was affected by this) no sympathy, gave us customer hell for weeks about why their DSL went down. After that, our owner simply did not want to be in the DSL business anymore with fear whatever company we signed on with, wouldnt last for another year. Honestly, SWB is SCREWING every third party DSL provider, which is why not many exist today. Our IP Communication customers still lasted up until last Feb of this year where they filed for bankruptcy. Whats weird, I have been at that place for so long, I was one of the first DSL techs and was one of the last ones.

As for your disconnect question when sombody calls in, it all depends on the modem. Some modems disconnect, while others just leave the phone ringing when someone calls in. We did have a free service like Callwave, called Message Access, but they too went under. They are specialty modems out there that actually advertise that they are a "Call Waiting" modem, but havent heard any opinions on it. Hope that helps. If any of my fellow BBS posters have a question, feel free to email me at tech_david@ev1.net

If you travel, you may not be able take your cable modem connection with you. ;)

I will freely admit that I still use dial-up at home. I have to watch my budget, and it's cheaper. My computer is pretty new and it's fast enough for most anything I would want to do. Of course, our phone line is rarely open for actual calls, but people can always reach me on my cell phone.

I was using Everyone's Internet (recommended to me by the Clutch bbs :) ) in Austin. It works great. Unfortunately, I moved to the sticks (Kerrville) which doesn't have an ev1 number. So I had to go with something local. Our phone company is independent and is sort of a monopoly; I presume they don't want anyone else in the market for dialup if they can help it.

I hadn't gotten around to cancelling my ev1 account - when I was able to convince my employers to give me a laptop. And this is the great thing: once you have an ev1 account, you can use it anywhere that has a local dialup number. So, since I like to take short road trips, I kept the account. It's nice to be able to connect from motel rooms in Corpus Christi, Houston, or even Tucson.

Dave2000 - do you know anything about why some smaller cities in Texas have an ev1 number, but others don't?

(now if only it weren't for the bad economy and gas prices, which are discouraging me from road trips right now...)

We are currently working on that, we usually add local numbers once in awhile. Just check out the website for a full list of numbers in TX:

Dave2000, do you know of an easy way to utilize the ftp on ev1? I do not have front page at all, and I'd like to find an ftp utility that works with Win95, and hopefully free???

I used to have an old CuteFTP that fit that bill, but GlobalScape updated the website, and no more freebies.

    Any Ideas?

BTW - this for my old PC at home... have XP at the office, but I don't want to load BBS pics there.;)

I use WS-FTP, works great for my domain. CuteFTP is still avaliable but only for a demo for like 30 days, then register after that, but we all know nobody registers and just waits for the delay. You should be able to find both on download.com. There are some great setups with screenshots on our homepage
