IIRC, some were locked before but the terrorists held a knife to some flight attendant's or customer's throats. Point is, there are prob other ways to get the door open also.
That's a good website. I also like this one - one can just enter the airport code and see the distance between two or more cities: http://gc.kls2.com/
I also hate flying, but not because of any fear. I just hate sitting around waiting for the plane to be ready, going through the laborious security, then sitting uncomfortably close to others in a metal cigar for 3 or 4 hours. It's WORSE than the bus.
I hate being trapped in such a confined space for such a long period of time. I'm a person who can't sit still. When I'm at home on weekends watching marathon sessions of sports, I always jog in place, do push ups, sit-ups, something to keep my body moving. I can't sit still in one seat for more than 20 minutes. Airplanes are hell.
kind of off topic: Are you one of the many people that Rice U. steered into a consulting job right out of school? They seem to do that with everybody. You'd think there was nothing else out there. Then you look back in a few years and you get mostly doctors and lawyers... just because you went to Rice doesn't mean you have to go that direction, you know...
It would certainly be a difficult situation, but I don't see any other option. If the hijackers are interested in doing something like 9/11, there's a good chance you're going to die anyway. Either they're going to kill you when you attack them, or they're going to kill you when they hit whatever it is they're aiming to hit, or the jet is going to be shot down. It seems to me that you would at least have a fighting chance if you attacked them, assuming others joined in as well.
I wasn't steered at all. In fact if anything I was steered to go work in Germany full time as an engineer to boost credibility to a foreign work program I helped kick off while at Rice. I am very happy with the decision I made to get into consulting. ok sorry - back on topic now. Flying is safe. I have about 50,000 miles built up this year, but I was in town for a couple of months which set me back on my path to platinum status...
