With the 23rd pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select:

    Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin

The Eagles were looking at CB and at their OLine. Although Jimmy Smith is an intriguing prospect at CB, I personally don't see them going that route, as there are serviceable #2 CBs waiting in the later rounds. Carimi provides them with OL depth and giving Vick a protector and a smart, 4-year starter on the OLine will help take their offense to elite levels.

    Draft picks so far:
    1. Carolina - Cam Newton
    2. Denver - Marcell Dareus
    3. Buffalo - AJ Green
    4. Cincinnati - Da'Quan Bowers
    5. Arizona - Blaine Gabbert

Locker was taken with the 16th pick so you need to pick again.

With the 25th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select...

    Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

Seattle has a pretty poor pass rush so this pick should help them in that area.

    2. Denver - Marcell Dareus
    3. Buffalo - AJ Green
    4. Cincinnati - Da'Quan Bowers
    5. Arizona - Blaine Gabbert
    6. Cleveland - Von Miller
    7. San Francisco - Patrick Peterson
    8. Tennessee - Nick Fairley
    9. Dallas - Prince Amukamara
    10. Washington - Robert Quinn
    11. Houston - Cameron Jordan
    12. Minnesota - Anthony Castonzo
    13. Detroit - Tyron Smith
    14. St. Louis - Julio Jones
    15. Miami - Mark Ingram
    16. Jacksonville - Jake Locker

    Thanks.
Instincts/Recognition: Has experience playing outside linebacker and defensive end. Fairly good instincts verses the run. Does a good job at locating ball carriers after disengaging blockers. Is discipline in his run fits. Needs to improve on his pursuit angles. Is susceptible to delays and draws, because he gets too far upfield. Against the pass, his instincts are below average. Often displays a one track mind when rushing the passer, which causes him to fail at recognizing screen plays. Also lacks awareness in underneath zone coverage. He tends to take false steps which causes him to be out of position when the ball is thrown.

Strength/Toughness: Very strong in the upper body. Has the strength to get underneath linemen’s pads and walk them back into the quarterback. Plays the game with violent hands. Displays good lower body strength which allows him to anchor against the run. Is one of Georgia’s toughest players.

Range vs. Run: Has the speed and athleticism to play sideline to sideline. Holds up well against linemen by extending his arms and keeping them at bay. Plays with good leverage and balance. Shows above average closing speed when pursuing ball carriers from the back the side. Does a good job at keeping contain to his side. Motor runs hot and cold. Will sometimes give up on plays that are not ran to his side. Will also jog around in pursuit of balls carriers that have reached the second level and beyond.

Tackling: Solid tackler who wraps up well. Uses his upper body strength to lay a good pop on ball carriers. Rarely misses tackles in the open field. Will struggle on occasion to break down in space against shiftier ball carriers.

3rd Down Capabilities: A dynamic edge rusher that is multifaceted. He can use his speed to bend the corner or his strength to bull rush linemen and collapse the pocket. Gets off the ball extremely well with an explosive first step. Motor runs hot when rushing the passer. Is a menace when rushing the passer and has the closing speed to track down mobile quarterbacks. Causes a lot of mistakes and turnovers because of the pressure that he gets. Wasn’t asked to drop into coverage much. Played the majority of third downs with his hand in the dirt. He did get an interception against Georgia Tech, but is still a liability in pass coverage at this point.

Intangibles: Was suspended by the team for two games in 2009 for violating team rules. 2010 Team Captain. Very fiery player that leads his teammates by example as well as vocal.

Overall Stock: Justin Houston finished the season second in sacks in the SEC. With the change from defensive end to outside linebacker in the 3-4, he saw his sack production go way up. Houston is the definition of a hybrid player. He can either play the rush outside linebacker position in the 3-4 or defensive end in the 4-3. I do feel that right now, he is a better pass rusher with his hand in the dirt. He will need to work at the intricacies of playing in a 2-point stance, and that includes playing in underneath zone coverage. There aren’t many dynamic pass rushers in the 2011 draft, and with half of the league needing to upgrade their pass rush, don’t expect Houston to be on the board no later than the middle of the second round. With his speed and explosion, he can make an immediate impact, wether it be as a sub rusher or a 3-down player.

    NFL Comparison: Terrell Suggs

Sorry guys, I've been a bit busy but we'll try to get this back on track.

With the 26th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select:

    Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State

The Ravens, usually known for their defense, had many areas of need to address on that side of the ball. Though the most obvious was CB according to many experts, I believe they must address their front 7. Heyward makes the most sense for them, being a 4 year starter who can step in right away. The knock is that he has limited upside and wasn't consistently productive, but he definitely fits into a defense that already has its stars and needs strong role players to step in. The other player that garnered a lot of attention was Brandon Harris at CB, but the Ravens feel that the dropoff isn't as great between the available CBs now and what can be found in the later rounds.

    Draft picks so far:
    1. Carolina - Cam Newton
    2. Denver - Marcell Dareus
    3. Buffalo - AJ Green
    4. Cincinnati - Da'Quan Bowers
    5. Arizona - Blaine Gabbert
    6. Cleveland - Von Miller
    7. San Francisco - Patrick Peterson

27th Pick Atlanta selects : Torrey Smith WR (Maryland)

The Falcons were initially hoping either Kerrigan Or Justin Houston was avaliable to draft beside John Abraham. But since both DE's were already gone , The GM chose to draft a player on offense WR to help an already potent offense become stronger. Torrey Smith should be able to make an impact fairly quickly beside Roddy White , Jenkins @ WR position.

With the 28th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots select OLB Akeem Ayers.

With their defensive line pretty much set by the Muhammad Wilkerson selection earlier in the draft, the Patriots now upgrade their young linebacker core which includes Pro-Bowler Jerod Mayo and outstanding rookies Brandon Spikes and Jermaine Cunningham.

Akeem Ayers is a Bill Belichick type who provides excellent versatility. He has two things Belichick likes in his LBs: ability to cover and pass rush off the edge. Ayers is a straight-up ballhawk with great coverage skills. I personally saw him singlehandedly beat-up the Longhorns right here in Austin last year. Still, many feel that he lacks the pure pass rush required from a solid rush linebacker at the next level. However, I think he fits here nicely because the Patriots defense is more tailored for Belichick's disguise blitz schemes rather than just pure player talent alone. That is why Belichick took a pass on Clay Matthews a few years ago because he believes it's easier to find guys who can rush 90% of the time without playing coverage. But finding a guy who can cover his man first, and then still blitz effectively is more rare, hence more valuable. Honestly, the Pats are getting a potential top-15 pick for a fraction of the price. Tremendous draft so far for The Hoodie who is going to be back with a vengeance.

28th pick the Bears select : Corey Liuget DT (Illinios)

Bears wanted to upgrade their O-line , but with all of the first round O-line prospects drafted already. The Bears chose to go draft a DT to anchor the Defensive line that is already pretty good. They could have looked at Few CB's like Jimmy Smith or Aaron.Williams , rather they drafted a DT.

    Draft picks so far:
    1. Carolina - Cam Newton
    2. Denver - Marcell Dareus
    3. Buffalo - AJ Green
    4. Cincinnati - Da'Quan Bowers

With the 30th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select:

    Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa

The Jets have one of the stoutest Ds in the league, so this pick may come as a surprise. However, I think that the Jets are looking for a DE or OLB in the first round. They want that pure pass rusher that can get to the QB in a hurry. However, I think that the players at the top of their board (namely a Justin Houston or Cam Heyward) were already taken. This selection came down to Clayborn, Brooks Reed, and Stephen Paea. The reason Clayborn came out on top was that he is a solid all-around player and probably a better pass rusher than Brooks Reed. Reed seems like an intriguing prospect but he is a tweener and may not have a pure position to play. I do think that Brooks Reed would be a better fit, but Clayborn seems like a safer pick.

    Draft picks so far:
    1. Carolina - Cam Newton
    2. Denver - Marcell Dareus
    3. Buffalo - AJ Green
    4. Cincinnati - Da'Quan Bowers
    5. Arizona - Blaine Gabbert

With the 31st pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select:

    Aaron Williams, CB, Texas

The Steelers usually are hard to predict in the draft, but it seems that the general consensus is that they will take Aaron Williams. They have some issues along the offensive line, and Derek Sherrod might be a possibility, but I think they'd be better suited to take OL depth in the later rounds. Aaron Williams fits into their system and would probably be the best CB fit in their system. I personally like Brandon Harris better as a prospect but it seems that the Steelers are higher on Williams.

    Draft picks so far:
    1. Carolina - Cam Newton
    2. Denver - Marcell Dareus

I think we may need to redistribute teams and get a count of who all is still in. I don't mind doing the remainder, just need to see who's still in. I thought we lost a lot of steam heading into the tail end of the round.

I have gotten a few emails saying that we should go through Round 3. I think that may be a little ambitious. However, what we can do is just have this go along at a leisurely pace up until the day of the actual draft. Then afterwards, we'll try to come up with a rubrick to score the teams and how they did.

So, for the managers who want to still participate (or even if you did not sign up earlier and you are now interested), please post the following:

    (1) That you're interested.
    (2) What team(s) you had and what team(s) you wish to draft for.
    (3) How you feel the draft has gone and what you think I can do to change/better your mock draft experience.

If we do this next year, I'll try to clean it up. Only way to learn is by making mistakes the first time around.

We can finally compare our mock draft to the real draft that went down last night.

    Nice work TB!

I had Jaguars taking Locker but that's pretty cool because the Titans ended up getting Locker while Jacksonville took Gabbert at 10.

We need to do the basketball draft as well!

    - Definitely enjoyed reading the commentary given pick by pick. I think next year, if we can get enough people, I will try to stay out of it and just play the role of commish and Mel Kiper Jr.
    - Did y'all at least have fun? I know we ran out of momentum with so many skipped picks and lapses and all that, but I think/hope it was simply because of the lockout. Hopefully we can do it again next year!
    - Any parting words to close out the inaugural NFL Mock Draft?

Bucs definitely get a steal in Bowers if he gets over the knee issues. He's still young so if he needs microfracture knee surgery, hopefully he makes an Amare type recovery and becomes a stud in the NFL!
