I totally agree with Ottomaton. ima_d, glad you posted this. I think you should think seriously about cold turkey or even more organized help.

You are lucky as hell you didn't injure or kill someone.

Just imagine if your entire family was wiped out just because someone "partied too hard".

I don't know what the laws are regarding alcohol related vehicular homicide but if I were a judge, everyone would get life in prison with no parole.

This blackout thing doesn't sound like something you regularly do. It also sounds like you care. I've driven home before when I shouldn't have, but I didn't quit drinking. I decided not to be stupid when I am drunk. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, but I think a lot of people are overreacting with calling you an alcoholic. I don't think that's fair of them.

Sorry I took so long to respond, I have been out of town. I am a recovering alcoholic. The only way for me to abstain is to throw myself into something else, in my case, powerlifting. I have gotten over coke, meth, weed and cigarettes but the one that I still crave in the cohol. I don't think I will ever truly quit. But when you consider the fact that I used to drink a fifth of vodka BEFORE I went out so that I could get drunk at the bar you can understand why I am currently proud to usually restrict myself to about ten drinks a week. These ten usually come on the weekend. I actually have gone ten days without drinking at a time in recent months without hardly noticing.

If you want to take up powerlifting please consult www.charlespoliquin.net

As a fellow musician, I understand that it is hard to be in that industry and not be an alcoholic. My only advice is remember that there is a time to catch the fish and a time to eat the fish. Be a skilled fisherman and catch good fish for you and your family. Once you have caught the fish, have a good time and eat the fish and don't be ashamed to enjoy the fish.

Part of being an alcoholic is dealing with people trying to make you feel bad for having such a good time. As long as you don't hit anyone or drive or hump a teenager you are okay. Getting piss drunk is customary is many parts of the world. Good luck and e-mail me anytime.

If you want to give drinking a break, try drinking non-alcoholic beer. At least you can still have some of the flavor, without the side-effects.

Thanks LG and everyone else. I've decided to stop drinking liquor forever. No Mas. I'm also going to cut way down on beer. I've gone for months at a time without drinking beer in the past, so it's not like I can't live without it. The end of baseball season will be a great help as much of my consumption took place at MM Park...

I don't think I'm an 'alcoholic' per se. Like I said before, Saturday was NOT the norm for me. I've only 'blacked out' like that less than ten times in my 30+ years. That's the first time I didn't remember driving home. But it was one time to many as far as I'm concerned and I'm not going to let it happen again. Ever.

I quit smoking for Y2K and I haven't so much as craved a cig in 4 years. There's no reason I can't do the same with alcohol. The first big test will be next weekends gig. We're playing at a wine festival  in South Shore Harbor. But we're not allowed to drink at some of our 'high end' gigs, so it's not like I can't play without drinking. Besides myself (and the horn players), no one in the band is more than a light drinker. I can do this.

Like LeGrouper says, I've pretty much thrown myself into my weight training program, so that's just more motivation to cut back on beer.

If you think it's turning into a problem, it probably wouldn't hurt to talk to a counselor or AA member.

I really admire you for taking stock of your situation. It would be so much easier to just blow it off, but you're dealing with it like a man. I wish you nothing but the very best, dude.

    Good luck.

    Immadrummer2k,

Last weeked was the first weekend in years that I did not have a drink. I'm trying to quit myself. I made the decision that I'm not going to last very long if I continue to drink even if it was just on the weekends. For me it was a problem because drinking every weekend always led to other things, like all nighters with coke and other drugs. alcohol makes it easier for me to do things I would later regret and it was killing me. But anyways I made the decision to quit drinking last weekend and doing all that other stuff that goes along with it and replace it with walking and running, pumping iron again, and spending more time at clutchity.net which has become a nice escape for me but whenever the urge to drink is there I don't give in easily but stop what I'm doing and think long and hard about it and realize what that one sip of alcohol will do to me and my judgement and allow me to slip off in too the deep end and feel like **** the rest of the early week. my young and reckless days are over.being sober is too good to go back to all that. good luck man, and email me if you want, I plan to go a year without drinking, no problem, right, feels easy now, we'll see.
