Thank you , I am an exact example of that. I thought it was just the way I was, just feeling so crummy especially when I was little. When its something like that it never went away till I was actually on something. Its not like anyone around me could tell but inside i felt so crummy and it boiled into something worse and worse.

A few people in this thread should really think before they open their mouths with such ignorant garbage. Then again, this is the part of the population that has never understood people with chronic depression anyway. This minority is also part of the pro-"just pull yourself up BRO" and the "just stop being depressed, what do you have to be depressed about?" crowd.

Zoloft is the best thing that ever happened to me. I've had a fantastic life since last August - studying what I love in grad school, making a bunch of new friends, working out regularly, playing sports and performing community service - but I really couldn't appreciate it due to my lingering depression. I was diagnosed 5 years ago and had managed to cope with it decently, but the stress of grad school made everything tumble down.

I'm not 100% now, and I still suffer occasional lapses, but I'm in a much better mood overall and my crashes are nowhere near as severe. However, ADs alone are not an answer - they just facilitate improving your condition. Therapy is still a substantial part of overcoming depression.

Paxil is actually in the same class as Lexapro (both SSRIs), so you may get similar adverse effects. Side effects do happen with any anti-depressant medication, but most likely you won't feel as bad as the OP. Also, it is definitely NOT "poison for most of the population". The most common side effect is nausea, which happens in 26% of patients (9% with placebo), but it usually goes away in 1-2 weeks, like most of the other side effects. I understand that you feel very negatively about this drug, but this is just false imformation.

You're basically saying that "depression" is not a disease and it can simply be treated with words? It's true that many people rely on antidepressive meds more than they should, but many other people really need these meds to get through the day.

I'm glad that you're doing much better. The generic for Zoloft is actually the most popular anti-depressant in my pharmacy. Lexapro and fluoxetine (generic for Prozac) are very popular as well.

why does it seem like so many americans are depressed? do you think it's a societal thing? 100 years ago were people so depressed? it's an interesting subject to me.

i've struggled with depression but have never taken anything for it. i don't think i've ever felt suicidal though. i've seen many friends and family truly helped by anti-depressants, so I think in general they're a good thing.

'not controlled' - what do you mean? that you dont need a prescription for them?

how so? i was speaking of prescription pills in general when i said they are dangerous and using them should be a last resort. be it zoloft, xanax, oxycoitin or vicodin.

you take 5-10 xanax or zoloft at once and you will be feeling pretty euphoric (you also wake up the next day not remembering anything)

"I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy **** we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off." - Tyler Durden

That doesn't really mean its controlled.

There are schedule 1,2,3 controlled medications. Placing ADs and xanax is like comparing cough syrup to vodka. That was my point, I understand what you are trying to say, prescription meds in general, but there are allergy meds you can only get from a prescription.

MAOIs, and trycyclics are different, those are a lot more difficult to get, MAOIs are basically a last resort due to the major interactions I actually almost died from one last year.

thanks for the clarification, but im really not sure what you were arguing w/ me about in the first place. i assumed it was a given that we were not talking about allergy pills.

An interesting question for sure. I don't know. I'm a little on the lazy side to do some research offhand, but I might later and have a better reply for you .

As for your own depression finals, why not give something simple like Zoloft (kind of an entry-level anti-depressant) a try? Then again, if it's not chronic then no sense in spending the money but if it is you might want to look into something to help you out every once in a while.

from personal experience i can say that taking 5 zoloft will make you feel pretty good for a little bit - they worked like uppers for me. similar to smoking some really good pot after drinking a few espressos.

There is a reason it isn't a scheduled drug (meaning it has no abuse potential) and kids aren't running around selling Zoloft on street corners like they do with Xanax.

If you really get high from 5 Zoloft, you should contact the AMA and Pfizer, as you are a unique case and should be subject to study.
