Really odd that I just saw a google ad for "Scott's Tarantulas" up in here... Nasty reading... oh, and get better robbie...
Wow, that almost looks like me. Interesting fact #101 that you may not know about Harrisment: When I was 2 years old 3/4 of my right index finger was bitten off by my pet rabbit. Now THAT is a deadly animal!
Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."
Well I dont really remember it, but I'm told they think the rabbit was just nibbling away in small bites. I was just petting him through one of those wire cages and he decided to take my finger off. I had a couple of surgeries where they tried to re-attach it, but they didn't work. Even got a cool scar on the palm of my hand where they tried to do a skin graft.
What happened to the rabbit. If that happened to my child, I swear, my child would have the honor of taking the first bite out of that cooked bunny.
I think they had to kill it anyways to test for rabies (not sure if that is really necessary.) My dad used to say that he chopped the rabbits head off, but I don't think there is much truth to that. I'm gonna see my parents tonight though so I'll ask them what really happened.
Couple of questions and comments: 1. How did he know it was MRSA without culture and susceptibility? MRSA and non-MR SA can absolutely not be distinguished on physical exam. 2. If you get furuncles (big pimples) all the time like you said before, you are probably colonized in your nose. 3. This shouldn't be a big deal (assuming you are healthy). Don't get down on yourself because these types of skin infections are becoming exceedingly common. 4. Did he prescribe your oral antibiotics?
1. he didn't do a culture but he said he has been getting more and more cases like mine in everyday. he said its got to the point where he is seeing 5 a day. people who think they have a brown recluse bite but its really an infection from MRSA. he may have been dead wrong and biased but the second i showed him the effected area he said it was MRSA. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/hip/Aresist/ca_mrsa_clinician.htm 2. this is the most i have ever seen pop up on me at once. i think i have 8 or so that have not totally healed yet and all are centered around my thighs and previously had 2 around the groin area where briefs cut off at, so in areas where my clothing rubs. also i have noticed a lot more red irritated spots that do not form furuncles. i have been under a lot of stress lately so that could be the cause of it. could also just mean i need to make sure i am wearing looser stuff. i might also need to make sure i shower more often rather than passing out at night and waking up too late to shower in the morning and not showering til the next night sometimes. 3. yeah i just got kind of bothered by what one of the other nurses said. he was all amazed that i got this infection and kind of freaked me out with some of the stuff he said. the doc was relatively laid back about it. and like i said he said this stuff is becoming more common and starting to move past socioeconomic boundaries. but i am still totally unsure where i got infected from. i went to play basketball on monday and i had to guard "sweaty fat man", but i was already having the symptoms on my leg before that. i dunno. 4. i did get an oral antibiotic. i don't have it with me right now but i am trying to remember the name. it was like bacium or something like that. i can't remember the formal name of it, but i believe it started with an S.
Speaking of ingrown hairs...I think I have one about halfway between my moneymaker and my belly button. It hurts pretty bad. I've popped it twice, and gotten brownish puss...but it's still there and swollen.
if it is MRSA, another way to treat it is, make a mixture of bleach and water, very little bleach vs water, but bleach nonetheless. wipe down the affected areas once a day. it should help kill the bacteria causing the infection.
I would say that you are more than likely colonized with MRSA (if it is truly MRSA). The most likely place is in your nose, so you touch your nose, then touch your leg or stomach and then your clothes rub and allow the bacteria inside. If the antibiotic improves not only the big furuncle, but all the others, then this is most likely the case. To rid yourself of the colonization, people usually use bacitracin ointment and apply it inside the nose for about 2 weeks. You can call your doctor for a prescription or buy over the counter (Neosporin). The antibiotic he prescribed you was probably bactrim or trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole.
That's what you need to do. I recently had 3 bites, which I suspected as being spider bites. I never knew what or when it happened, but one day I just had an itch on the back of my hand, like an ant bite..and that's what it looked like until a day later. After 2 days, I had a swollen hand, a swollen forearm from a second bite, and a third on the elbow. I talked to my Mother on the phone, a nurse, and she thought it may be an allergic reaction to something. She told me to get some type of cream with benadryl (I think) in it and use that. The next day I told her the swelling had gotten worse, and she told me to go to the emergency room, which I did. I'm one who never goes to the doctor, but in this case, I ran the risk of blood poisoning, and all that mess. The doctor shot me up with 2 heavy antibiotic shots, one in each cheek (hurt like a mofo), and I took antibiotic pills for a week or two. They slowly got better. You don't want to play with spider or insect bites that do that to you.
