A Norht or NE wind will clear up the bays and the beach; in Galveston, if the wind has a westerly component, it will muddy things up. Also, in the winter, it can get even clearer than it was this weekend. There's some type of moss that will grow in the bays when the water gets really cold, and this moss acts as some type of filter.........when that happens, the bay and beach water (as long as the wind behaves) will get super gin clear. It was a beautiful weekend though, and the water was even nice enough to swim in.......not too cold. Although, I definitely spent the weekend shuffling my feet when I was in the water..........my first morning out, I caught about a 30 lb. stingray.......biggest one I've ever caught.
It was the same way a couple of weeks back as well. I've lived here all of my life and have NEVER seen it that clear. This pic was taken at Fish Tails, right across from the soon to be new amusement park.
I remember during the months after Ike the water looked like Cancun. I figured the hurricane washed away all the mud. But yeah, it gets even clearer during the winter. That's my favorite time to go. Not as much riff-raff as during the summer.
I was there last weekend. The weather was great, but I don't remember anything remarkable about the water.
was there last September too. the water was brown because of the frequent raining.. last weekend, it was clear.
I need to get out to galveston soon. the water looks awesome. I hope some of this nice mid-80s weather holds up for a little while longer.
As a dude who had a beach house .... October is my favorite time at Galveston. The water is warm and the air is cool. And the bull redfish are up close to the shore. The water is clear because we have been in a two month drought and the rivers and streams aren't washing down mud, the north wind does flatten the stirring of the surf allowing it to settle out. It's not unusual for Fall. The eddy of the Gulf Stream does make the dirty water of the Mississippi come this way. It's why our water stays so brown and the water at Panama City, right by The Mississippi, is so clear. huge image
I lived in Houston for around 25 years and never knew Galveston could have blue waters. lol. Too bad it's the exception rather than the norm.
Surprised no one has mentioned the typo in the title. "Anyone go to Galveston last this weekend?" Whoops.
