I think I got onto this through a pop-under ad. Most scams are just propogated through email communications in my estimation.

    Hmmm... From your first post:

I got this email about a new group-buying marketing paradigm (out of Russia no less) for buying laptop computers.

    :D

Hey - "group buying"? It's a Ponzi scheme that's currently under investigation, because a lot of these things have cropped up on the Net over the past 3 months.

I forgot where I read this... I think it was Slashdot. Maybe MSNBC.

That was just lazy writing. I remember I got it from a pop-under because I got it again after I looked at it the first time.

No this is not a joke, but it must be a scam.

I wrote to CNN.com and told them about the CNNarchives.us site and the probably trademark infringement.

    Go Dudley Dooright!

    Here's a whois on the cnnarchive.us site:

    NS4.DNSMANAGED.COM 192.31.80.34</blockquote>

and here's one for the REAL cnn website:

    TWDNS-04.NS.AOL.COM 64.12.147.120</blockquote>

There are several things to note that make it obvious that cnnarchive.us is not a CNN website. Chief among them is that it is a .us domain, which is hardly ever used, and never by any big companies like CNN. The whois really has some interesting information . . .

giddyup -- don't feel badly. When I went to the site, I started falling for it too. It looks like it's on the up and up . . . I wasn't sure it was a scam until I saw the cnnarchive.us site and did the whois . . .

I know, I thought that was funny. I googled for it, but didn't come up with anything. Also, it's "Trevis Consalting". I've never heard of anyone or anything named "Trevis" before . . . Trevis Consulting didn't come up with anything either . . .

well done rockHead -- I hadn't thought to do a whois on that site! hahaha, this is a pretty funny little scam -- they certainly did a lot of work to make it look nice at first glance, but with some research, it crumbles very easily . . .

That "Read More About Us" CNN banner is the bomb. I still haven't heard from the lawyers at CNN.... :)
