    Wanted this for years:

-Change the entire regular season/playoff format.
*shorten the league by 10, maybe more, games....as well as allow teams to play more teams out of their conference.

*Get the best 16 teams in the League.....PERIOD. Enough of the West/East crap.

    -Add a 4th ref.

-David Stern.....I hope we're done with expanding the League....we already have enough mediocre teams.

    Recently:

-Take away that inner circle in the paint. Tired of seeing grown men run quickly to step in front of it just to take a charge instead of actually playing defense.

-Cut down on the "slapping the backboard after a dunk" type technicals.

I know none of this will happen..............oh well. :p

I'm tired of letting Big Men like Shaq run over people and still get to the free throw line. If guy just stands there with his hands in the air, it should not be called a foul. He is just holding his position.

NBA League Pass made into regular basic cable channels.

Fouls are called by the book, reguardless of the players involved. In fact, just follow the rulebook in all circumstances.

Get rid of the 5 sec backdown rule and every other illegal offense/illegal defense rule while you are at it.

Change the goaltending rules so that anything outside of the "restraining area" (that circle near the hoop) is fair game, no matter which way the ball is going.

    Bring back hand checking.

Quit calling so many flagrant fouls.

Find a line of longitude that has half of the teams on each side and split the conferences there. Do the same for divisions.

The division champs should get homecourt until they play the other division champs with a better record, none of this first round only BS.

Move back the free throw line, but give two FT plus the penalty (3 FTs total) when teams are over the foul limit on shooting fouls, 1 FT and the ball on non-shooting fouls.

Minimum of one minute OF GAME CLOCK between timeouts.

    Four points from beyond halfcourt.

I think if you moved the 3 pt line back to 25ft, you wouldn't see so many mediocre shooters standing out there, thus more motion would be in offenses. Shorten the shot clock to 20 secs, the half court violation to 7 secs. Bring in a trapezoid lane like international ball and on the new 20 sec clock, if the defense has the ball, let them go. After turnovers unless the ball is very far out of the play, the refs shouldn't grab the ball and hold it. This would speed the game up drastically and keep guys from standing around the arc, thus bringing back the mid range game.

If we don't like like comparing regular season standings and statisitics to the playoffs. They should not look at the regular season "season series" to see who gets homecourt. The #2 seeded Lakers got it last year against #1 seeded San Antonio. But that was due to the regular season series, that went in LA's favor. I mean, just look at the god damn seed and let them play at home. EVERYBODY SAYS the regular season doesnt matter so let's see the better reg. season team play at home. That's just my take.

Another thing I think we need something new of, is fan voting of the all star game.Basically just let the coaches and players vote and forget about us. I'd rather see some good basketball from players who thought those players were worthy of that spot on the team, than to see "show-off" "barely good enough" "wife beating" superstars. But in that case It wouldn't really be called a "all-star game". It'll bemore like a street ball festival.

    But you get my idea.

Or We can actually get people to vote who actually know stuff about the game, which would end up being 400,000 people out of the 3.5 million votes taken every year. They "David Stern" trys to expand the game like any other Professional organization but its not really working well for the players who are doing good that the "bandwagon"<i>only available at the end of the season to root on the finals team"</i> don't know about because its not the Lakers.

Get rid of the damn international/college-style defense rules and implement a quick, referee-disgretion only instant replay.

Agreed on the 20 second shot clock.
Also I'd like to see a situation where you would get a free-throw and the ball for non-shooting fouls.....while the penalty.
Maybe that would cut down on some of those stupid reach-ins?

I also have to agree on Shaq not getting anymore interviews, or participate in any after-game press conferences.

Every flop is a foul on somebody. Either it's an offensive foul on the offensive player, or a TECHNICAL on the defender. With that in the back of their heads, we'll get more defense from the defenders and less acting.

Players with six fouls are allowed to continue playing...but their team is immediately put at the team limit for fouls if they do, and fouls by that player result in an extra FT: 3 on a missed FG attempt, 2 on a FG attempt thats made and so on...

Any team 10 games back (or more) of the division leader gets spotted 15 points to start the game.

On the fly substitutions during the fourth quarter. As long as the player coming out steps out of bounds first, anyone from the bench can come right into play...imagine the fast breaks that would cause. :D

didn't the NBA move the 3 point line IN a few years ago, making it a uniform distance to the basket from all points on the court? did that last or did they end up moving it back to the original version? anyone... anyone... ferris?

Make defensive players earn the charge. It's so frustrating to watch an offensive player have a clear lane to the basket, only to have a defensive player step in (on the move) at the last second and fall down like they were shot out of a cannon. You're not going to stop flopping. It's a part of the game, and smarter players will always try and find a way to beat the system. You just have to be more observant, and really stress that the defensive player be in absolute perfect position to draw a charge. There's some players that do a good job of earning and staying in their position (Jason Kidd, Robert Horry), but the majority fall down at the last minute (Derek Fisher, Vlade Divac, Rick Fox, Karl Malone) Nine out of ten times, when it's even remotely questionable, it's a charge. Defenders have to do virtually nothing to establish position.

Oh, and realize that whenever you have leapers like you have in the NBA, there's going to be contact. This goes all the way back to the Juwan Howard - Derek Anderson play in the 2001 playoffs. It may *look* bad to see players coming down that hard, but realize that often times players will go for the ball, and crashing to the floor is always going to happen as a side effect of them leaping that high. The NBA is making the same mistake that the NFL is making with its quarterbacks... making them so "priceless" and important that whenever there's contact it's an automatic flagrant, even if it's an attempt on the ball. Contact will always be a part of the game, and it's about time they recognize that...

Agree! In soccer, if a player is acting to be fouled he is granted a yellow card.

But then we are talking about NBA refs here ......

We so need a trapezoid lane. It makes way too much sense not to do. Right now, someone can get called for three in the key standing 14 feet out, practically on the wing (the corner of the key). That same player can stand 6 feet from the basket on the baseline for the entire duration of the shotclock. That makes no sense at all. The 3-second call makes no sense 14 feet out in the corner, because there isn't any great advantage to establishing position there. The sad thing is that people wonder why there isn't much mid-range game in the NBA. LOOK AT THE KEY!!! WHAT MID-RANGE SPACE!?!?!? And you wonder why coaches run all those iso plays on the wing: all the space is on the wing! (how many iso plays have you seen called from the top?) There would actually be movement with a reasonable key. Make it a circle. 8 feet all around. THAT makes sense.

On a side note... can you imagine Shaq trying to survive with that? He would actually have to play basketball instead of Sumo wrestling! (that is, if they actually called 3 seconds on Shaq, instead of strictly enforcing his personal 7.23481 second limit)

They moved it back because it created spacing problems that slowed down the game.

get rid of the three point line

Either that, or put a limitation on three point attempts. Allow each team only ten three point attempts, or only allow three pointers in the final quarter of games

Drexlerfan22, good points about the trapezoid lane. I hadn't given it much thought until your post, good job.

Move the 3pt line out even further, make it as unattractive a shot as possible, only the guys who can really make that shot (or can't create their own shot, i.e. specialists) need to take 3s. Hopefully, players would stop taking the 'lazy', unaggressive shot, and start creating more (i.e. middle distance game, drawing fouls).
