I am set to graduate from SHSU next spring. I was curious to see what kinds of jobs others have had coming straight out of college. Thanks.
Too late to switch to comp sci?? But for real, good luck. My first job post college was for $11/hour. I would suggest looking at Rice/UH, Med Center, oil/gas companies, but an MIS degree is kind of a hard sell IMO. My MIS prof at SHSU was some woman from Florida. She was OK.
You need the degree for HR purposes but you need the experience/skills to get an actual job. Degree alone will not get you a position. Do you have any Certs? If not, get certified in whatever you are interested to supplement your Degree.
A few of my friends were MIS majors and got jobs as QA analysts, business analysts, and consultants in all sorts of industries around Houston. It's definitely competitive though. Do you have any degree related work experience?
CIS major from UH - Downtown 1 yr out and got a job in downtown Houston for large company in Forensic Audit $44K Sometime finding the right job is timing.
Yeah I think that was her. For the non-major class she wasn't bad. Anyway, if you secure that internship you're off to a much better start than I was. Experience is all that matters.
UHD CIS grad here too. I got an internship and eventually got hired. From what i hear getting in is the hardest part. Degree definitely helps to get your foot in the door for entry level.
If travel isn't an issue try to find a firm that implements SAP and other ERP platforms. A simple Google search will find you hundreds of companies. They are always looking for talent and most bids require product certification and a certain level of education. Your current resume works to your advantage here. Implementations can be 6 months to several years and you'll work for the PMO on the implementation team not for the client so it's a great place to cut your teeth and grow. If you want to be in demand and more technical, learn some SQL/XML/Messaging/etc... and get into SAP integration with other systems especially integration. In my business we always needs folks like this and good ones are very hard to find. SAP, Oracle E-Biz Suite, Peoplesoft, JD Edwards, Microsoft Dynamics, Infor are the leaders in this space. Most companies will own 1 or 2 of these platforms and will need integration at some level.
This day and age all people care about is experience. I also have a degree in MIS and it is very challenging finding a job without relevant experience. I'm having a tough time finding a job.
same. I live in the Silicon Valley, so I was told it would be a good idea to do MIS because of the area I live in... do any of you think this will make it easier for me to get a job?
