This is what 90% of people think when they here "Zappa." <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/489pO9q8guA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
If you know the man and his music, that is a statement that says more about the 90% than about Frank Zappa.
I love it all. Apart from Joe's Garage, my favorites are Sheik Yer Bouti, You Are What You Is and Just Another Band from L.A. ("Billy the Mountain" is a classic.). I also love Thingfish and Live at the Fillmore '71.
I came here to post my support for Zappa but found out I had beaten myself to the punch... Back in 2006!
I got all excited to see a Zappa thread this morning - then realized it was a thread I started 5 years ago. Weird. I've been listening to almost nothing but Zappa for the better part of a month now and I literally can't get enough. Always been a casual fan (because of his great drummers) but never really explored his entire catalog like I've been doing recently. Lately, I've been all over Joe's Garage (just a masterpiece) and all the You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore volumes. It's funny, when I was in college, our percussion ensemble played Strictly Genteel and at the time I had no idea how amazingly cool it was. I didn't even like it. I just didn't 'get' Zappa at the time, I guess.
Honestly, as a huge fan of FZ, I think his 80s music is a bit UNDERrated. Even "Valley Girl" is a truly beautiful piece of art. Hell, this album cover (Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch) might be the best album cover ever. Zero sarcasm. Love it. Carry on.
