So... if I want to coach high school or middle school soccer/basketball ... what's needed? I only have a Bachelor's degree and it's not in education.
You don't really need to do anything other than find a team that needs you. I gravitated towards my alma mater and found a position there. The only reason why it's easier to get a position coaching when you teach is because you are the first to know, and get asked to do so.
There are certain restrictions for being head coaches in Texas public schools. To be a varsity head coach of any sport you have to be a full time employee of the district. Which could be as a maintenance worker cafeteria lady etc. I do not think there are the same restrictions for assistants, but many school districts will have their own criteria for that.
That's interesting... here you don't have to be, but it tends to turn out that way. Is it true for grade school as well as high school?
I think it is just for varsity sports, and only head coaches. So Junior High is considered like assistant, and only for public schools too. Privates have their own regulations, and obviously little leagues set their own rules according to their boards.
In Kentucky, Grade School - 1st through 5th Middle School - 6th through 8th High School - 9th through 12th with my masters I will be able to teach the middle grades from 5-9 so I will be able to work at any level. If I end up at a high school I would like to coach a freshman team but not JV or Varsity necessarily.
